ust when it looked like things between the UAW and General Motors had settled down, another union local has announced a strike that could impact GM’s production. UAW Local 1853 has gone on strike at Johnson Controls’ factory in Columbia, Tennessee, which is responsible for supplying seats and consoles for the upcoming Chevrolet Traverse.
The UAW says the strike is a result of Johnson Controls not recognizing the UAW at the Tennessee plant, despite the fact that 170 of its 172 workers have signed union cards, according to Automotive News. Local 1853 also staffs GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee plant, the location where the Traverse will be built.

The 2009 Traverse is slated to begin production in September, but that date could be pushed back if the strike lingers.
