Ricardo, You know what they say.

Fat chicks are like mopeds...
They're a lot of fun to ride, you just don't want your friends to see you on one.

The big three need to regain some self respect and either get off that moped or trade it in on a shiny new BMW.

I personally find it appalling that the majority of Union workers consist of high school drop outs and people who have never went to college yet, they get better pay and benefits than most people who had the perseverance to get a four year degree.

I know this fact for two reasons:

1 - When I was an engineer for Delphi, I was told I could not put anything on the line that required reading as some of the employees had a "limited" education and it would be against UAW policy.

2 - While working on my second degree I met a UAW employee who was pissed because she lost her GM job to outsourcing after working there for over 15 years. I asked her, "As part of your benefit package over the last 15 years, wouldn't they pay for you to go to college to better yourself?" She said yes, they would have paid 100% of any classes she took. So why didn't you take any I asked? Get this...

She told me it would not have been worth her time to take college classes and get a degree because any job that she would have subsequently been qualified for would have paid less than she had been currently making.

No offense to anyone reading this but, if you work in a factory all day doing relatively mundane things a high school student can be taught, your pay should be commensurate. Minimum wage or maybe a bit more, but certainly not over $60,000.00 per year (not to mention overtime that is acquired by "line slowdowns"). If you want to make more money, apply yourself and get more education.

Contrary to popular (UAW) belief strikes are not how most people get raises.

OK, I'll get off my soapbox now.

The Union also needs to be flexible when it comes to plant closures. 90% pay for employees doing nothing during closure (for slow-downs, retooling, etc) is a joke.

1115: I call Bullshit on you.

You don't know the difference betrween "your" and "you're," and expect us to believe you went co college?

I think the Big Three should have changed their relationship with the UAW when times were good. They should have given the union stock, and put in quality-based incentives.

I don't think many of the union workers are overpaid, but the union and management are top heavy, and the UAW needs to get realistic about concessions it'll have to make

It's stupid tactics like this from the UAW that sometimes makes me wish they really do strike, run GM into the ground until it goes out of business, then bring Ford and Chrysler down with them, so every single UAW worker is out of a job, and all the cars we buy are either made in Mexico, Japan, or Europe, or with non-union U.S workers at Japanese owned plants. Maybe THEN the UAW will get a clue.

America doesn't have time for UAW stupidity. They need to learn the hard way I guess.

Oh, and productivity is NOT the problem. Whoever said that should be shot as well.

If productivity was the problem, then why are the unions FORCING GM to produce cars it can't even sell. It seems production is what GM has plenty of, demand is not.

So is it GM's fault that demand is not high and why should the UaW suffer? Because it's actually the UaW's fault.

Their greed has forced GM to penny pinch and design their cars around MUCH tighter budgets and profit margins, forcing them to produce quality which is inferior to their competitors, without substantially less retail cost to offset it.

Maybe if the UaW wasn't so fucking greedy, GM could sink more money back into their products to make them more competitive.

It's simple.

Shoot everyone who belongs to the UaW, on the grounds of treason. Why?

1. People who commit treason do harm to the nation they are committing treason against
2. The UaW are doing harm to America by helping to kill its auto industry
3. And are therefore committing treason

Just kill them all. They are worthless pieces of garbage. Kill them. Shoot them. Hunt them like animals. Set them all on fire. That's all you need to do.

fuck 'em... fire them all. This is GM's chance to finally get out from under the UAW. Give them a clear choice - either accept a part time position or lose your job. Hire as many people into management as possible to run the plants and fill the rest of the positions with 29hr/wk part-timers working four shifts. Let them strike.. I just hope to God that GM has finally grown a pair...

Damn it, again with the strikes threat. This must be incredibly irritating for GM. Just now when they're about to make a tiny little profit and things seem to look a bit up, someone needs to f*ck around with wages and crap. What the f*ck is wrong with you, unions?!? Can't you see that if the company goes down, EVERYONE goes down with it? Bastards!

Bryce? So, you think the "disease" (which it is) should be kept only at American carmakers? That's fair - The big 3 have to struggle with Union BS while everyone else gets a competitive advantage over GM by not having unions.

Good idea. UAW to strike and have no income for it's members. If I were a GM worker, I would thank God I had a job. So yea, go ahead and strike you dummmies

Toyota is a bane but it's foolish to support unionization at Toyota plants. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend". Where the UAW is concerned, that means that it would be difficult for the entire industry if the UAW gained a foothold at Toyota plants. Toyota really doesn't have that many plants, but the disease would still be spreading!

I'd like to play Devil's advocate and say something in UAW's defense, but I do believe union labor is a huge problem, and maybe the biggest problem facing the Big 3.

autonut's right that there are unforgiveable excesses at the executive level, especially those execs who don't do a good job, but the salary/beneft/legacy costs of the union reach far wider.

Union workers got fat and lazy (figuratively) on pay and benefits years ago when the going was good for the Big 3, and they kept gorging themselves year after year on more pay and benefits. The going is not good anymore, and the union needs to learn sacrifce in a big way. Airline unions since 9/11 certainly have felt the pinch.

What burns me is that the article reports that the union will work out a deal with 2/3 and then coerce the third into a better deal that's then used to reneg on the deal with the first two and get a better deal. C'mon. I'm sure striking would have dire consequences for GM financially, esp. in the short term, but I'd also like to see what would happen....

"I think its only fair that either Toyota's American plants are unionized or the Big 3 is ununionized"

Whaa? Unions are a dinosaur from the past. The Big 3 would love to get rid of them, but how are they going to do it?? They would almost HAVE to go bankrupt like Delphi to get a response from the unions. The union's time in our country is over, and the sooner they are disbanded the better. They are crippling the companies they work for. Like I said in another post, to have a high school graduate driving a Porsche and making 80k+ for putting together a door on a car is ridiculous. Let the market decide salaries like everything else. If they are REALLY needed, then they should have nothing to worry about. I suspect though that a lot of them could be replaced by chickens...

I'm here Veda - I just happen to have a life and am not on LLN 24/7. And all I have to say here is - see, toyota doesn't have to deal with that. While Toyota is spending their money on more standard features and higher quality materials, GM is FORCED to take care of a unionized work force that cares about no one but themselves. I don't know how GM manages to make good cars like they have been making lately with the union trying to drag them down.

Driven, I think those numbers don't tell the whole story. I don't think union strike will help union workers or GM. It will help union management to hold authority/monopoly on labor relationship. However, the numbers don;t tell the level management that is paid handsomely at Big3 for not producing much at all.
I agree that unions don't fill the roll they did 50-60 years ago, but management is waisting money in their own right. I think a major reason that foreign companies in USA have much lower costs is not that they don't pay proportional salaries or health benefits to its rank and file, they don't have the same level of bureaucracy and they do watch their cost of operations.
One more note: in Japan manufacturers provide decent salaries, health care, child care, education and generally they invest in their labor force more then US counterparts and it is voluntarily.

Luca, I completely agree. The problem is the Big3 cant afford to stay in business paying the UAW current wages while they struggle to become profitable. The Big3 needs to tighten their belts until productivity increases and US autos see better sales. If the UAW doesnt work with the Big3 then the Big3 will eventually fold under the pressure of high costs and low sales.

The UAW is short sighted. They just want to suck as much money from the Big3 until the companies go under. The UAW doesnt realize helping the Big3 survive helps them keep getting paid into the future. I guess short sighted greed is what you get when you have an organization run by high school dropouts and members without the capacity to grasp the big picture.

GM should go chapter 11 and reorganize all their contracts under protection of law. If the UAW doesnt like it GM can wash its hands of the UAW completely. There are plenty of out of work autoworkers. Hire them in a union free plant - the plant stays open as long as their is no union. GM can keep playing that game long enough to be profitable.

Average annual compensation for a high school graduate at Toyota, Honda, Nissan (in US): $96,000
Average annual compensation for a high school graduate the Big 3:
Ford: $141,020
GM: $146,520
Chrysler: $151,720

Its time the Big3 teach the UAW a lesson. Start moving plants to cheaper countries & letting highly compensated UAW workers go. Sure it will hurt at first but it is the only way to survive long term.

Then the UAW will begin to understand a percentage of nothing is nothing. They need to compromise to keep the company cutting the checks in business.

Screw the UAW and its overpaid workers. Hopefully the workers saved their extra $20/hour becuase they will need it to live on for the rest of their lives.

Syrax, I'll never forget the fat chick who had me in her sights. Fatties can run pretty fast when they are "chasing the one they lovvvvvvve!" Then they stand there panting like pigs with their jaw dropped and you stupidly try to be civil and not directly tell them to get the flip away from you.

That's the lesson in life I learned from fatfucks: DON'T BE CIVIL.
Just tell them to get lost.

A question: how much does it cost labor in Japan? I think it costs much more than in USA, anyway, and not only for undervalued Yen, japanese firms are competitive (means they make profits) even in small cars just like Daihatsu (rabadged Scion in USA). The same for german labor, the most expensive in the world, nonetheless Germany's automakers export a lot. So the problem of American Auto Industry and UAW is not cheap labor, the real problem, is productivity. UAW is facing a wrong issue and should cooperate with big 3 to raise wage of workers and more than balance that improvement with a large growth of productivity!
best regards

I like it, it's one hell of a twist, but I like it...I think that's the best one I've heard from you Ricardo. I think it's is wya past the time the big three take their lumps and just let the unions go. This is all a bunch of B.S. I saw were it benfited the employees 20+ years ago. Now days all it does is commit companies to pay their employees for xxxxty work. Hear is one of the few times I will give Toyota as a company major respect.
