UAW to Ford: Executives’ earnings are “excessive and unjustified”
04/04/2008, 5:49 PM
By Drew Johnson
Ford revealed on Friday that it paid its top five executives over $60 million in 2007, and that kind of compensation is not sitting well with the United Auto Workers. UAW President Ron Gettelfinger responded to Ford’s announcement on Friday by calling the pay awarded to top executives “excessive and unjustified.”
During the most recent round of contract negotiations, the UAW gave Ford several concessions with the hopes of turning the North American automaker around. Not surprisingly, the UAW is upset that Ford spent some of its labor savings on compensating executives rather than re-investing in its North American operations.
“Our members at Ford agreed to substantial sacrifices in 2007 to help Ford survive, so the company can rebuild and reinvest in the United States,” Gettelfinger said in a statement released on Friday. “We did not sacrifice so that management could find a way to reward themselves with higher compensation.”
This situation looks like it could get messy and we’re sure this isn’t the last we’ll hear from Mr. Gettelfinger on the subject.

Not a fan of the UAW, but this is a legitimate gripe. For how poorly Ford is doing, those guys should not be making bonuses of any sort until Ford is in the black.

Yeah, golf4me said it. The UAW is usually wrong, but in this case they’re right. Most executives are extremely overpaid, especially for those underperforming.

It is a shame that motherf**rs who don’t owned 3 brain cells for the room filled with board of directors could see this coming. What kind of signal those salalries for assholes send? In addition to jobs flowing out of the country.

This would be the first time I support the UAW’s opinion. While the company is struggling heavily the execs are cashing in 10+m yearly, it just doesn’t make much sense.

Simple as this $50,000 for real work or 3.something million for running it to the ground.

Still..Ford needs to rid itself of the UAW to exist. They make profits all over the world except for the USA…where the labor is unionized. I don’t like the fact that they got paid what they did…especially Marko Fields…but they were under contract and did get paid for what they did. Thats all part of negotiating a good pay plan. We all do that don’t we?? The UAW said they suffered in the new contract…but it was up to them to sign the deal. They could of walked. But then again, that would be a great thing if they did. Pissing and moaning…that is what the UAW does the best.

I think it will be theoretical discussion in very near future. The fact is that Ford management mortgaged ALL of it’s assets for 23 billion dollars because they could not get operating line of credit with their credit rating. When 23 billions run out creditor, whoever idiot is, will have to sell assets to the highest bidder. Since there is not a chance ford will make money anytime soon it is a matter of time and creditor patience before Tata will buy the rest of Ford (or some other Asian wannabe).

Nothing new, all of the big three have massively over paid execs, the thing that gets my goat is that its almost like a club for the boys, even if they do a crappy job and get the company closed down, the twenty or so million they make a year isn’t enough, they just walk into another highly paid exec position at another company and continue to rape the workers. The chrylser execs have been getting huge bonuses for years, even down to the grade 94 managers, 50 to 200% of salary and they have been helping to drive the company into the ground for years. I dare say people like Nardelli will never be happy no matter how much money they have, its all about power over people I suppose. In my humble opinion, the same rules should apply to the execs as any other worker, if you can’t do the job you should get fired PDQ.

I am not a big fan of these big exec salaries but UAW know that these salaries were negotiated long before their agreement with the company so they need to shut up and include it in their next round of negotiation if Ford does nothing about at.

I’m surprised at how much the UAW talks out of their arses.
While their complaining about Ford overpaying their executives, which is true, the long list of paychecks in the six figure range has been increasing 20% every year, since about 2001. Most of these guys aren’t earning nearly as much as these fat cats up in comfy offices, but that numbers been raising. I think Ron Gettelfinger’s been earning around 150k (he earned 125k in 2002), which isn’t excessive at all, but what is excessive is that long increasing number of six figure employees working as regular laborers, part after part at Ford factories.
The UAW’s numbers have been decreasing, and maybe the reason why is the Big Three have been taking care of their workers, which they’ve almost always done since Henry Ford. I think this is more than less a cry out there to warm people up to what they consider the “atrocities” of big business, making accusations left and right to try to keep hold.

But hey, if I were in the position of some of the UAW workers, I wouldn’t be complaining. We should be proud that we can sit around and do a somewhat tedious, boring job all day long, and come home to a good paycheck in the mailbox every month
. The UAW has it’s purpose, but it needs not to get into the financial affairs of Ford, GM and Chrysler.
We may not see that for much longer, and I’m not talking about the UAW either.

Not just the Big Three, most company directors and officers are overpaid. They also favor each other and elect each other to multiple boards! And thanks to Delaware and the SEC, shareholders basically can’t sue anyway, and as long as it’s “business judgment”, the have no personal liability. Remember Michael Eisner whom more than 50% of Disney s/h hated, yet still got elected as Chairman? Then he would get along with the CEO whom he handpicked and Disney had to buy out the CEO’s contract. Talk about corporate waste. Case was litigated and of course, no one was held liable. What you expect from a fascist economy like ours?

When was the last time a lineworker got a call at 2am for a corportate problem, or had to work a 14 hr day with no overtime. Or had to cancel a schedule vacation, or work through the flu? How about fly across the world for 2 weeks away from family without any notice? No overtime, what will we do?!!!!
THeres a reason why one guy makes 55k and another makes millions. Now that being said, Rick Wagoner offering to cut his pay in half to something near 1.5 mill or so, is much smarter than these Ford hogs making 2o+mill. At least he made an effort to show he is part of the team, and he works his educated, talented ass off for it.

Dislike them as I do, I tend to side with the UAW on this. Although the execs’ contracts may have bee set in stone prior to union negotiations, part of the reason financially that the execs hit their goals (and thus qualified for more bonus) is that the unions caved to them. If nothing else, this type of bonusing leaves a bad taste in the union members’ mouths, and will thus make future negotiations that much more difficult.
It would have been wiser for the recipients to defer the compensation until the turnaround is complete to avoid the hard feelings in the rank and file.

Ford is just a dirty corrupt company building and selling crap to its foolish customers. But like all corrupt corporations and governments, it will eventually collapse, but the execs don’t care, because they got so much money to last 500 years.
