Toyota is not dealing with this problem and it has been going on for a couple of years. Toyota maybe used to care about their reputation, but now it is all about selling more cars and have gotten too big to see the big picture.

If you would take a severely flawed car that could have dangerous unintended accelleration that might hurt innocent bystanders then Toyota management are not the only ones with their heads up their asses.

It is not the damn floor mats and it affects more than just the models mentioned here. My father in law bought a new Avalon and had intermittant problems with unintended acceleration. Toyota was terrible in their dealing with him forcing him to loose thousands of dollars trading in for a different car. They refused to consider that the car had a problem. I hope they get to the bottom of the problem instead of just blaming it on floor mats or some other unrelated problem. There is a serious flaw in the throttle somewhere that is affecting Toyota across the board.

I hope this knocks some of the arrogance out of Toyota and makes the company suffer a little bit.

The thing about the Japanese companies is that they will acknowledge the problem and fix it bc they give a damn about their rep
Ford on the other hand will give you a hard time if you bought a brand new Focus and your tranny and master cylinder go in the first 4 months
I would rather take an over accelerating ES 350 over any domestic offering any day

The new Jeep Wranglers don’t accelerate, they do the opposite – they just shut down on the highway when you’re already going 100 mph, therefore losing access to the power component of the brakes and steering. Equally interesting though….

Wow, that sucks for the people involved. I agree that a mat can cause a gas pedal to stick, but 40 similar complaints? And who knows how many unreported incidents?

To the people complaining about using simple reflexes to deal with the situation, need i remind you of the primary clientele for the two cars mentioned? Not exactly driving enthusiasts. To many of them, driving is uneasy work. To most of us (as car enthusiasts) it would seem common sense to put the vehicle in neutral or apply all the brakes if it won’t turn off.

In any event, I think it sucked on Toyota’s part to not at least be a little more diplomatic in an already unpleasant situation. It comes across as them seeing their image (or profit) as being more valuable than these people and potentially more. Besides, I thought they were nose deep in profits?

‘ve noticed that NOBODY with a Prius has posted about themselves having this problem. I have an ’07 Prius and haven’t experienced this.

Audi and I believe Jeep had the same problem. Haha does anyone remember the 60 minutes report on the Unintended Acceleration of the Audis, the president was blaming the customer! THEY ARE FINE CARS!! THE DRIVERS ARE STUPID!! I believe its even in some textbooks of a perfect example of what not to do in a situation like that. After that buying an Audi was almost unheard of.

I agree that the floor mat cannot force the gas pedal down with enough force to cause an accident. It can however hold the pedal stuck if it gets wedged between the side of the gas pedal and the wheel well – it has happened to me before, and sure enough, it was a set of rubber all-season mats that caused it… wasn’t a Toyota though.
You’d have to have snail like reflexes for this to cause an accident though… the brakes on almost any car can stop it even if the accelerator is floored. Also, stomping on the pedal once or twice should free the offending pedal… worked for me.

I accelerated from a stop in a Ford Explorer and when I let off, the floormat held the acclerator halfway down. Then I applied some brake and reached down to pull the mat away.

my idiot boss rear ended someone in his clk230 when his floormat was over his gas pedal, every time he hit the brake the car lunged he hit the same guy twice at the same light. the moron had the car towed to fletcher jones in newport beach just to be told it was his floormat.

Im sorry but a floor mat does not have the capability, nor the will to force a gas pedal to be depressed enough to cause an accident. Its simply impossible. It doesnt have the weight!. Put the entire floor mat so it lies on the pedal, and realize NOTHING happens. BS I tell ya. Its electrical.

And I didn’t even know the Prius was capable of 100 mile plus travel in a 6 mile distance. I’ve seen them speeding pretty fast on highways, but I’ve only seen them top around… 85 miles per hour? I’m presuming less than 90.

What’s really sad though is the Toyota dealerships blaming it on floormats and leadfoots. I’m sure the possibility of floormats doing this is plausible, but avoiding any other possibilities and using the floormats as a scapegoat is ignorance.
