I disagree, I don't consider the design evolutionary, I don't consider Lamborghini's to be getting more conservative, I do, however, think you need to open up your eyes and maybe re-read what you're typing, and then maybe delete, edit, and repost. Wash, rinse, repeat, you know the drill.

LamborghiniZ,

Just because its been happening for a while doesn't make me any happier to hear about it. Its true that the Murcielago is a much better car for heading down to the shops in than a Countach, but its also true that Lamborghini's styling has become far more conservative over the last few years.

I'm commenting now because instead of letting the "improvements" take place behind the scenes, Lamborghini's PR has decided to announce the erosion of their brand's values in a press release. Buyers with true affection for the Lamnborghini marque love it because it is Italian, independent, fiery and liable to make the odd mistake. These are not characteristics that one associates with Audi.

Companies such as Pagani Zonda are now producing cars that stun viewers in the same way that the Miura and and Countach did in their day. The Murcielago is an evolutionary design, with themes developed from the Diablo and with a very classy but unexciting interior. Old Lamborghinis were revolutionary.

Incidentally, what do British cars have to do with it?

niallpolley, is this your first day reading about cars? Did you not know that the Murcielago and Gallardo have been influenced by Audi and hence the Germans since launch? The Murcielago was launched in 2003, so for at least the last 3-4 years or so? Did you not know that British luxury cars are being influenced by the Germans and Americans? Ever heard of BMW/Rolls Royce, VW/Bentley, Ford/Jaguar? Get real, this is nothing new, and in fact it's making these cars better than ever.

I feel you Lambo, the only ferrari that makes my head turn is the 550 Barchetta(in my opinion the last good looking ferrari), but gallardos and murcielagos... i like the diablo even more. I've driven a Diablo GTR in Interlagos and it was one of the best driving experiences ever.

Yeah I agree with deantj's description of Lamborghini, its exactly as he says it is, darker and more sinister, menacing and angular, forceful and imposing. I love Ferrari, I love the 599GTB especially, but it doesn't strike the same feeling in me that Lamborghini does, Ferrari makes beautiful cars, cars that many can be passionate about, but it doesn't give me the same type of passion I get from Lamborghini. Of course I turn as quickly as possible when a Ferrari speeds by, but when I see a Lamborghini, i catch my breath, they're just that, breath taking, and such a nice , in my opinion SUPERIOR alternative to the likes of Ferrari , Aston Martin, etc. (Though Aston has a cool style to call all its own, i'll give them that )

Actually the Countach was basically undrivable. You couldn’t see out the back, parallel parking was impossible, it broke all the time (those damn high-maintenance V12’s, you know?), was temperamental (to say the least) and was insanely expensive to fix. The Diablo wasn’t a lot better; the 4WD system on the VT was a joke. However, ever since Audi bought the brand, they are fast and furious (no pun intended) and now, finally thanks to the Germans, well built.

Carnut4ever,
I guess that would be a selling point for upgrading to the Murcielago.
"Sir, so you don't like the soft top look? You can always go with the Murcielago Spyder, it's only $124,100 more. It's nothing, you'll only be seeing your monthly payment go up by $2,590 more a month. Pocket change."

They make some great cars though, Lamborghini has always been my dream car to have. Jalpa, Countach, Diablo, Murcielago, Gallardo, they're all great.

I think the Murcielago has more dramatic stance and styling. The only thing that the LP640 cannot compare to the Gallardo is the roadster versions. The Murcielago roadster's canvass top is a joke. Why can't it have the fully automatic retracting soft top of the Gallardo? This is unacceptable!

A friend of mine who owned the first gen Murcielago just traded it for an apartment building. He said the car is a piece of art to look at but not to drive fast. He much prefers his F430 when it comes to handling.

Yeah it's a heavy car and many underestimate it's speed, however the Murcielago you thought was slower may have been the pre-LP640 version, the original Murcielago with 580 bhp instead of 640. I was actually a bit conservative with my 0-60mph estimate for the LP640, the manufacturer's estimate is actually a mind blowing 3.3 seconds, according to http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/cars/murcielago_lp640.asp. Gotta hand it to Lamborghini

I totally forgot about the LP640. I also thought the Murcielago was slower than that. Learn something new every day :).

Look all of you, as A4 stated, the Murcielago was just very recently updated into LP640 guise, which includes roughly 60 more horsepower, a more responsive engine (almost hard to fathom), a new updated interior, and a freshened exterior including all new tail lamps among other things. I think this sufficiently makes the Murcielago the flagship model, and the only way the Gallardo steals the Murcielago's thunder is through its greater volume of sales, which is achieved simply because it costs less and they produce more examples of the Gallardo each year. The Murcielago is faster, maybe not much faster, but when you're talking about 0-60 mph in about 3.6 for the Murcielago and 4.0 for the Gallardo (let me know if my estimates are off), then you're not going to see a whole hell of a lot of difference, primarily because when you get THIS powerful the time differences won't be huge. You're not going to see the Murc hitting sixty 4 seconds faster than the Gallardo, because they are both in such an extreme league of cars that's impossibe. The Murcielago is more imposing, more exclusive, more powerful, more expensive, and in my opinion better looking, all attributes that make this car easily worth the extra cash over the Gallardo, and also helping it be my favorite car of all time. This isn't to say I don't think the Gallardo is an amazing vehicle, but I just don't see it even touching the LP640 in flagship terms, simply because it's not of the Murcielago's character. A comparison: the 550i might be similar in speed to the 750i, but does that make it a flagship? Nope, there are a variety of different variables that make a car a brand's top offering, not just speed. Long live the Murcielago!

LP640 OWNS GALLARDO, in the price range of the murci an update is not needed as often as the price range of a gallardo, it would actually stale the murci to be updated

Yeah. The LP640 has asymmetrical air scoops, which is really cool.

Kenny... the murcielago just got an update in the form of the LP640, as in 640 horsepower. Good to see Lambo collaborating even more with Audi.

Andre Neves,
Thats exactly what lead to my question. I don't understand how Lamborghini can let its flagship exotic grow so stale and be cannibalized by its younger brother. IIRC doesn't Porsche want Audi to drop Lambo altogether?

The problem I see is that the Murcielago & the Gallardo look & perform too similarly. Yet their prices are so spread apart that the Gallardo is stealing much of the Murcielago's thunder.
