U.S. autoworkers accused of selling trade secrets to China

07/06/2006, 1:11 PM

By admin

Three former employees of a Plymouth-based auto supplier have been chraged with stealing trade secrets from the U.S. auto industry and selling them to Chinese competitors, reports the Detroit News. U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy said the economic espionage stabs at the heart of the Michigan economy and is a growing priority among his federal prosecutors. Chinese automakers are expected to begin a U.S. market offensive in the next 12 to 24 months with a slew of ultra-low-cost vehicles. “We have sent a message to those in the community who would be thinking about participating in the theft of trade secrets,” said Daniel Roberts, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Detroit office.

Anyone remember that blurb I just recently typed about the Chinese stealing technology from everywhere, in response to that article about those Chinese Junkboxes coming overseas and making their first appearance at the Detroit Auto Show this year?

This is the **** I’m talking about. That f*ck!ng useless country trying to catch up to the world, not in their own right and with their own effort, but by stealing from anyone and everyone they can.

Useless asses…

I think that the Government should just not allow them to sell their cars here. I mean, they can do that cant they? And whos gonna know when they dont start selling cars here? The Government should just ban them from being sold here and then the Big 3 wont lose sales.

That or just show how crappy the Chinese are (crash tests, quality, etc.). Show how you get what you pay for. You dont pay much, so you dont get much.

If you guys are so against things make in China, then give up everything made in China and don’t buy anything made there either.

Of course that would mean you would have to give up almost all your electronics, furniture, kitchen stuff, kids toys, clothes. And you would have to give up your home, because most of your materials would be made in China, but that would be the patriotic thing to do.

….Speaking of Patriotism, hope you didn’t buy a flag over the weekend, because that flag you bought for the 4th of July was made in China too, so you just celebrated an American holiday by giving your money to a company in China.

Ironic that those of you who bash China are probably the same folks that bashed stuff made in Japan back in the 80’s when they were just in the process or ripping a hole in most of U.S. Companies. I recall the same saying. This thing from japan is crap, that thing is junk. Then things got better, and better, and finally you depended on your Sony “junk”. Then came things from Taiwan. The joke was electronics from taiwan was crap. And the bashing started there, this computer MIT (made in taiwan) is crap, that is crap. Then you started noticing you couldn’t find a computer/electronic thing that wasn’t made in Taiwan.

Well, pick up everything you own, and read the label that tells you where things are made….Yup, history repeats itself. Everything is made in China. Even stuff labelled “Sony” is made in China.

Ever wonder why this happens? American labor is too expensive, especially with all the unions. (Can you say GM/Delphi/UAW?) Yet, we, the american consumers are always looking to buy something at the cheapest possible price. So companies move work to countries where labor is cheap and companies can sell at prices american consumers want to buy while maintaining their fat margins.

I got news for you Jacks. It’s an economic cycle. You laugh at stuff made in China now. But if you really took a look at everything you own, you wouldn’t be able to survive if you didn’t buy anything made there.People were laughing at the Japanese cars back in the 80’s. No one’s laughing anymore. People were laughing when the first Hyundais came out. In about 4-5 years, no one will laugh at those either. Hyundais will be the equivalent of Toyotas are now 5 years from now. Toyotas won’t be your “best buy cars”. And your crapmobiles *Hyundais of today” will be the stuff made in China. You laugh now, but some of you will end up buying those as well.

Where american auto co’s will be 5-10 years from today. It’s hard to say. My prediction is that most of the brands will be sold to other automakers. I wouldn’t be surprised if GM starts to disintegrate and sells parts to Nissan/Renault in the future.

I agree with # 3, they should make the chinese makers partner with American companies to sell here, just like the chinese government makes American car companies do to sell in china.

Also this is a real problem with defense, apparently on multiple occassions they’ve caught chinese nationals trying to smuggle night vision equipment out of the US, as well as missile guiding technology – the US is building it’s own replacement in China by allowing the Chinese yuan to remain undervalued.

One other thing, why would you steal american auto technology??? Shouldn’t they be spying on the Japanese or Germans?

This is similar to something that the Japanese did to Ferrari in the late 80’s. Ferrari had designed a new and revolutionary sportscar, the 408. This car was designed around the now popular “monocoque” chassis. Just as Ferrari was about to release this car, Acura rushed the exact same design to market, only with a V-6 in it instead of a V-8. The NSX. Acura must be Japanese for “stolen design” which all of the Japanese car companies are famous for. It is evident throughout Asian automotive history. Thanks to the treaty after WWII, the Japanese can get away with things like this without prosecution, whereas if an American company did the same, they would be under serious litegation. Just another reason that I drive an American truck (prior to being made in Mexico or Canada) and European sports cars. My daughters Mazda has more problems than my “supposedly” problematic vehicles.

#3 … that’s not the way it works.

#4 … there’s always a market for everything. In time, that market will explode.

#5 … BINGO.

#6 … those guys need to go to China and work for one-tenth the money. I don’t want to pay a monkey $25/hour to put in clips and screws. And if s/he damaged my car, I’d damage his/her skull.

I have to laugh at the knee jerk reactions here. Do we not live in a capitalist controlled society? Why are people suprised ideas and technology get stolen? Do you think Bill Gates became rich from making his own programs? Do you people even go to the movies? Or listen to music? Everythings derivative, very few things are original now. As long as money is involved it will continue, so get used to it. And the racism displayed here is sickening.

The supplier is based in a town called Plymouth, not Plymouth automobiles, and second of all I am glad that most plastic products are produced in China. Do you have any idea how much pollution and health risks are associated with the manufacture of petrol chemical goods and electronic devices. I am not and ecofreak by any means but I don’t want that **** over here. The low Chinese wages won’t last by the way. China actually has a falling population which will decrease the supply of labor and when the Chinese middle and working classes see the protections, rights and freedoms that there counterparts in the west and Japan have they will demand the same things as well. In the beginning of the 20th century American workers worked in the same conditions as Chinese ones and we see how that turned out.

..and continuing from where I left of #5…I hope most of you who are bashing China realize that China and Japan alone are the largest creditors of U.S. Treasuries. They own our butts. If you don’t understand what that means. Let’s put it in your terms. The U.S. is a debtor similar to your average credit carder wielding consumer that is soaked knee deep in debt…so deep that you no longer talk about how much total you own, you talk about how much more your spending versus earning(IE “deficit”). Foreign countries buy U.S. treasuries are our creditors. They include several countries in Asia, and EU (less so). #1 and #2 creditors of U.S treasuries are China and Japan. Why do foreign countries do this and why does the U.S. allow this? Because the U.S. needs to someone to offer us loans so that we can spend more than we earn on things like the War, Welfare, Social Security, Medicare, etc. And the U.S. is poor and doesn’t have the money. At the same time, foreign countries buy our Treasuries to help peg their currency to the dollar and keep things low so that their exports are favorably priced in U.S. markets. And with arrangement, us consumers end up buying the cheap goods made abroad like China and Japan and Korea…accelerating foreign countries trade surplus and our deficit. It also doesn’t help that our labor is so expensive (thank you unions)…it doesn’t make economic sense to produce things here.

So our nation is knee deep in debt and countries like China Japan Korea are our huge creditors. So now, you ask why doesn’t our government just pass a bunch of tariffs on import goods? Well, it’s not that simple. You can’t really play hardball with someone that you owe a lot of money to. Because if you piss them off, worst case they call the loan early, and if you can’t pay for it, they’ll dump the loan on the free market, causing the value to crash… Now, quite frankly that won’t happen .Because doing so would shut off the largest consuming country in the world. But Imagine the situation if the European Union is successful in building a successful consuming economy and has deeply established trades with Asia countries. China and Japan one day realizes that the U.S. is no longer the only large consuming nation. China and Japan dumps all their U.S. treasury notes on the market. What do you think that would do to our economy?

Our nations problems are similar to our own consumer problems….We spend money we don’t have, and we expect better standards of living that our jobs/professions could naturally command on the “rest of the world” economic standards. We created the problem, and now that the problem is out of our control, we try to blame others for our own problems we created. And the easiest way to do this is via racism.

So if you want bash these countries, do the honorable things and give up all things made in China. However, I seriously doubt any of you bashers would do this. Which brings me to the next point. You’re just a bunch of hypocrite whiners. Because you complain about the problems you inevitably contribute to, but you aren’t willing to take any action/sacrifices to fix the problem, such as changing your shopping habits, looking about where things are made, expecting to pay more for things made here, etc. I bet most of you don’t even bother to try to figure out where things are made.

And BTW: for all you GM bashers. With dephi in the dumpster, where do you think GM will be sourcing parts from in the future????????

Japan has a $7 trillion national debt. This equates to 160% of its GDP. They will be threatening no one anytime soon. The U.S. national debt totals 8 trillion dollars or 60% of GDP. $4.0 trillion is owned by U.S. citizens. The Japanese and Chinese together hold $921 billion and that number is falling and is being picked up by the British. We own our own asses thank you very much. We can play hardball with the Chinese because we are their biggest customer. Just because you not like the Chinese government doesn’t mean you are a racist, the Chinese are a nationality not a race. And finally you assume that the Europeans will be able to work together, overcome their aging populations , get rid of their welfare state in order to create more discretionary spending, fully integrate their economies, overcome cultural and political differences and provide a united front and common set of economic policies. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Obviously something must be done to lower this by about half but realize these two things: The U.S has had one year of no deficit spending in the last 230 years and every major economic power is in debt. The only countries without debt are the Gaza strip and Palau.

#20: debt by itself wouldn’t be a problem, if you actually produced something that could offset. The problem is far less is being exported than imported. Hence growing deficit. Which is the plight of many of americans as well. Spending more than then they earn. But then again, I don’t give a **** about them…Because given how high salaries are here for stupid labor. If you fvcked up and have $50k+ in credit card debt on a 20% API, yet still manage to spend, spend $799/month on a auto lease and still say you can’t afford a home, well that’s really that person’s problem, not mine. And then, you sort of have it coming if you’re really that stupid. And if you lose your job because you keep buying imported ****, that’s also your problem not mine.

#20 last time I checked, several U.S. states are welfare states. Also we give plenty of welfare. Labor unions are a license to handouts. Affirmative action, another hand out.
Health care for illegal immigrants. Another handout. And let’s not forget about the subsidized industries that the government pays. Sugar, ag, oil, etc, etc, etc.

#23,I agree with everything you said about personal responsibility and ridiculous compensation for what amounts to no work. I defend American carmakers because Japanese and European engineering ideology and aesthetic sensibilities do not appeal to me and I want a viable, competent yet uniquely Yankee alternative. Also, since GM, Ford and DC are still huge employers for Americans I believe that those who essentially pray for their destruction are Economic Traitors. And #25, I agree that we also have a welfare state, a wasteful one at that, but comparing ours to the ones in Europe is like comparing my local post office to the pentagon, One of the biggest criticisms logged against the U.S. by Europeans is we’re cruel and inhumane because we have no welfare state which goes to show you how large theirs really is.

Apparently you have name differential skills equal to a wrench, the title is called “US autoworkers accused of selling trade secrets to CHINA”. China, as in Beijing, China. Not Japan, two completely different countries. It’s like calling a Canadian an American.
