U.S.-spec Nissan GT-R to have 480 horsepower

12/06/2007, 4:00 PM

By Drew Johnson

Nissan will keep good on its promise to bring a 480 horsepower GT-R to the U.S., a new report finds. The Japanese version of the GT-R makes 480 PS — which translates into 473 horsepower — but Nissan officials want the car to have an even 480 horsepower rating after U.S. SAE certification.

Nissan officials failed to mention how they planned to wring an extra 7 horsepower out of the GT-R’s powerplant.

The Porsche 911 Turbo — the GT-R’s benchmark car — offers 480 horsepower, so matching that output is crucial for Nissan.

Don’t forget the Injen and Powered By Toyota stickers. They could hit 500 with those.

Haha, those were pretty good guys. However my favorite will always be the NOS stickers, especially when you ask them what NOS stands for and they can’t answer your question.

Powered by toyota? Oxymoron.

There’s a dealership in Kansas called “Superior Honda.” It’s not a motorcycle dealership, so it’s an oxymoron, too.

and while they’re at it they should put an infiniti sticker on… except that it wont increase hp, but they can get some fools to spend more for it… gotta love capitalism

Still weighs to much to have the performance that people are saying. A 8.3 hp to weight ratio is not enough to beat the zo6 6.3 hp to weight ratio.

Put a huge wing on the back and a coffee can tail pipe, and that has got to be at least another 25 HP.

Fairlight:
With turbos that’s the easiest, most obvious way to get the 7 horses… just a minute increase in boost. So minor it’s hardly noticeable, really. I actually don’t know why they don’t just make it an even 500, as that sounds a lot better, and I’m sure the engine can probably handle enough boost to make about 600hp without sacrificing very much in terms of reliability at all. Also gives more torque! :)

yeah you’re right G. All they have to do is something small like slightly tune the turbos and increase the boost by a few psi. As long as it’s tuned properly and in proper ratio with everything else it’s a quick way to increase hp. But I think the reason why they aren’t making it in upwards of 500hp yet is because in a year or two, they are probably going to increase it to that point so it’ll eventually get there. The automakers have to hold back a little on performance in the very beginning so they can offer more the next model year and to help attract buyers. Even though the GT-R probably doesn’t need this. Let’s not forget too that this is just the GT-R. When they bring the Spec-(?) that’ll probably have 500-600hp maybe more who knows.

G,
First you’ll lay down $70K + ‘2nd sticker’ + tag/tax/title just for the car;
Then they’ll show you the NISMO catalog with the ‘racing only’ wastegate, ECU, cold-air intake, headers, downpipe, cat-back exhaust, ’sport’ muffler, 20″ wheels, bright red brakes, lowered springs, recalibrated shocks, tower braces, and full body kit. An easy $30K installed which I bet 95% of buyers will go for. The remaining 4.99% will go to to an aftermarket shop and trash the warranty. Within two years half will be in the junkyard, most of the rest will be for sale but no one will trust the mods. The only ones that will retain any value will be the 0.01% that were unmolested and cared for.

Global_lightning has it bang-on. The GT-R is going to be kept underpowered (relatively) solely so Nissan can throw the factory upgrade catalog at you. $125,000 GT-Rs, anyone? No? Didn’t think so.

This car is going to be an aftermarket dream. Dont spend your time worrying about expensive Nismo upgrades. Get them aftermarket. Providing that the car is overbuilt like the previous GTRs, this car should be hitting 700hp within a year or so.
