Vauxhall unveils its Corsa SRi

09/28/2007, 11:02 AM

By Drew Johnson

Vauxhall has unveiled its Corsa SRi for the UK market. Based on the Opel Corsa SRi, the Vauxhall Corsa SRi — which makes its return after a two-year absense — was first shown in Barcelona this past June. Power for the hatchback — which will be available in 3 and 5 door guises — comes from either a 150 horsepower turbo 1.6L gasoline engine or a 125 horsepower 1.7L diesel.

Vauxhall claims the gas-powered Corsa SRi can accelerate 0-60 in 7.6 seconds and hit a top speed of 130 mph. The diesel version requires 9.3 seconds to reach 60 mph and can top out at 121 mph. The diesel also returns an impressive combined average of 58.9 mpg.

Prices for the Corsa SRi will range from £13,625 to £14,885. There are no plans to import the Vauxhall Corsa SRi’s sister car, the Opel Corsa SRi, to the U.S. under the Saturn brand.

Too bad this couldn’t be the Focus HB in the US. Plus, if we could ever get a diesel like this here, I would imagine the hybrid market would start to shake in it’s boots.

It was Ukranian – slightly different than Russian, purdue

And this car has the potential to kick the Yaris’s and Fit’s ass here in North America. I see no reason why Saturn shouldn’t bring it over here like they did with the Astra

Commodore it was definitely Russian. Every Kazakh can tell Russian. This car can kick ass in US only if it passes CAFE standards. Every Kazakh knows that it is as possible as for you to marry my bride Pamela Anderson!

Aside from the misaligned gaps on the dash the car is cute. The Corsa is actually a cool little car.

How could another blob shaped car be nice looking.

You have been brainwashed for so long you think a crease or edge or headlight shape makes the blob look good.

Blob cars are made by engineers, not designers.

GetReal – I think that’s the point of this car. When the prerequisite is a vehicle that returns a 59mpg rating, it’s kinda at the mercy of an engineer. There’s only so much you can do with a subcompact.

With that said, I’d love to see this here as an option from the Aveo. This Opel at least has a few design embelishments versus the Daewoo Aveo.

At the current exchange rate, this car would costs ~$25k in the US. That’s a lot $$$ for a subcompact.

Very nice looking- I especially love the front grill, but I do agree it looks very shapeless. It would be a great edition to Saturn, or even a new Chevrolet Aveo!

jJayC08, agreed. That would be a great competitor as a Chevy Aveo… if odie is wrong, of course.

No it wouldn’t Odie — it would be below the Astra, which starts at nearly 16 thousand. If it’s more than that, they will either move production of it elsewhere where it is cheaper or the car won’t come to America at all

Nice! I really am starting to shop at Saturn. Astra looks promising. But I doubt GM will bring this over to compete with the Aveo, Accent and Rio5. Maybe they will bring this over to compete with the higher priced Japanese subcompacts like the Fit, which costs $16k+ (READ overpriced!)

Hi Odie, yes it would be expensive, however that doesn’t get around the fact that we pay far more $ in this country (well, £ actually) than you do in the States. I would bet that IF this came out in the states, it would actually be cheaper for us to buy one in the US, ship it back, and still have saved a couple of thou on the list price. Car prices here suck big time. Basically car prices seem to be double here than the US, so a strict $/£ conversion never works

There is heavy talk of the Corsa being brought as a Saturn Corsa and Corsa R models. Big holdup is crash testing so a revised bumper for US spec, since these engines are already to Eurocode, but will need a revised ecu upgrade for US.
