The C30 will be unveiled to the public at the Paris Motor Show in September and production is scheduled to begin at the end of 2006. Two videos after the jump…

I seriously hope you’re kidding about the Malibu/Cobalt. This car looks fresh. I like it. Gives a nod to the classic P1800 of old.

That’s exactly why it kicks so much ass.
Even though the rear doesn’t really look like the suv.

I would stil rather have the GTI. That DSG transmission is very sharp and it will cost less than the Volvo.
German cars are better than Swedish cars.
I do like the retro rear glass on this car though. Ver sharp. Very P1800 ES.

The GTI is pretty nice, and the DSG is amazing, but i don’t want to deal with the VW reliability issues a few years after i get it. The C30 is really nice.

Mike: C’mon. Do they really compare??? When was the last time a Swede won a comparo test in a major publication. I do not think I am the the only one who thinks that “the fatherland” construkts superior cars.
PS…that is not what your mom said last night.

Im looking forward to the T5 version. I have an 850 turbo and it is one of the best cars (and engines) Ive ever owned…so reducing the weight and mating it with a 6 speed manual will be sweet

As much as I like the rear of this car (which I think the Swedes tried to copy the Citroen C4 look), the car still has that new-age hideous Volvo front fascia so I’ll pass on it.

Remember though that very little was done to this car versus the show car. From what I understand the lower body cladding will be optional on the T-5. I think it (the T-5)compares very well to the GTI. Remember this is the same chassis from the Mazda 3 and the Euro Ford Focus(both of which have tested as well or better than the chassis on the GTI.True it does not have the DSG. I personally prefer to shift for myself. And from an asthetic standpoint the C30’s shape is more attractive than the GTI’s. Where it’s a little weak is in the corporate front end. However with the lower body cladding this should help it. Interior wise I also like it better than the GTI. The T-5 with a 6 speed should be a fun car to drive and at 3000 LBS it’s also lighter than the GTI. Therefore performance should be as good or better. Also I’ve driven T-5 sedans before and I like their 5 cylinder engine noise. If you go to http://www.c30world.com there is more info on this car.

Looks like a Vibe/Matrix from the side… I hope it is larger.. Still, it will allow Volvo to sell beyond the Granola/retired teacher crowd.

The interior of a GTI is hard to fault. DSG is more than cool. I prefer to shift myself as well, however I don’t think that Volvo shift mechanisms are very nice. (or VW’s either for that matter) so the option of having such a superior peice of tech is really important.
The 2.0T is an amazing motor. It has high compression and turbocharging, which used to be impossible. It is very smooth and pulls like a much larger engine.
Both of these cars will sell well, it just a matter of personal preference. I am curious as to where the C30 T-5 will price out at. It may get close to an R32, which is superior. I like the idea of a German car for $25K. There is German and then there is everyone else.
You know what is going to be cool though, is the Mazdaspeed3
To be continued….

If it were priced in the low $20’s with AWD I’d be standing in line. I’m guessing it’ll be priced above the GTI. As much praise as I’ve heard about the new GTI, I’ll never buy another VW. Way too many reliability issues.
