Video: Audi RS4 vs. BMW M3 CS

05/26/2006, 11:19 AM

By admin

Perhaps one of the most popular match-ups among car enthusiasts is the Audi RS4 against the BMW M3. It’s not exactly a fair comparison, because the Audi RS4 is a brand new car and the BMW M3 has been on the market for some time. What’s more, the RS4 costs a lot more than the M3. Still, it’s an obvious comparison and the U.K.’s Fifth Gear couldn’t resist the idea. See the battle after the jump…

Not sure why, but for me the video ended right after the RS4 had done its 2nd drift?!

Anyway, I’d take the RS4 in medium blue please. I’ve sat in an RS4, and everything about the car is amazing, except the backseat, which is tight for anyone over 10. But otherwise the car is beautiful. The seats are leather and they hug you well, and they are very firm and supportive. The shifter’s shape is perfect and very comfortable, I could hold it all day. The steering wheel is thick and supportive, and the flat bottom is a cool touch. In addition, the carbon fiber trim looks and feels good.

For comparison purposes, the price point is actually important, IMO. The RS4 costs anywhere between $66K to $80K, depending on options, with the M3 CS being between $50 to $55k. So for the cost of a fully loaded RS4, you could get a fully loaded M3 CS and throw in a Saturn Sky Redline for sunny days.

Um, Tony, from where are you getting your prices?

The RS4 costs $77,000, fully loaded. A comparable M3 costs around $60,000 (this because BMW charges you even for the damn floor mats!) Sure, it’s $17,000 more, but you get: 87 bhp more, 2 more doors, and AWD.

When the V8-powered E92 M3 comes out, it will start at around $60,000 and easily get up to $70,000 once you are done putting in comparable options to what comes standard on the RS4; although, you still won’t have AWD and will probably be 20 horsepower short of the RS4’s 420 (the assumption is that the V8 M3 will have the 400 bhp engine from the last gen M5).

Actually the 400hp was just a guess by magazines from about a year ago. Real numbers are supposed to be closer to 420. Plus do you honestly think the new M3 will way more than the audi? Audis arent light cars. Bmw’s arent either but they are lighter generally speaking. Also i dont think its fair to compare the RS4 to the current M3CS maybe try a CSL and it might be a bit more fair. Remake the video make it an S4 vs an M3… guess who wins. Oh… and im not sure if this is important to any of you but….. the BMW was “more fun to drive”.

05/26, 4:25 PM

Yes, the BMW is ‘more fun to drive’, because it has RWD, but which one is safer? The S4 with its AWD system.

Have you seen the spec list on the CSL? It is really not a useable car, unless you are looking for a track-day car only. The car has no: A/C, no power seats, no radio (forget about Sat Nav), no sunroof (as either standard or option), and no useable trunk, since the only trunk liner is a thin piece of cardboard. Also the tires that come with the car are –near-slicks, which can’t be used in hot weather and can’t be used in rainy situations. Not really a comparison to a completely useable, everyday car like the RS4, is it?

Jon.

That should read ”The RS4 with its AWD system”, since the S4 also has AWD.

Admittingly it was a difficult one for the BMW, however that RS-4 is the king of the class for now. When and if the new M3 shows is for a different discussion- because the waiting list for the RS4 is one year, and most of the people in the waiting list I can bet are M3 potential M3 customers lost to the competition. Besides, it is better to sell them when the economic outlook is good- never can tell what will happen in a year from now.

With the New RS4 Audi has made a great car. a great step forward for the RS4 because the previous one wasn’t as much fun as this one. 50/50 4wd distribution, why?
they have changed that now. finaly
but I would always have the BMW. well I do. but it’s just the thought of the audi being modded VW’s whipes away all positive emotions.

First off your comparing to an M3 with pretty much the same mods as the one from the year 2000. It’s like 2001 M3 Vs the new RS4. Let’s say it was 2004 S4 VS 2004 M3. The M3 will take the S4. And Second of all. The moment you take the RS4 or (Audi) in general off the dealers lot. The car value drops close to half way. I had an 2004 S4. I bought it for like 49,000 used. It only had like 3000 miles on it. The next year when i tried to sell it back i was offered everywhere for only like 35,000. I sold the car for 38,000. My point is Audis depreciate like crazy. And BMW’s somewhat holds their value atleast A LOT better then Audis. Now, that brings me to my third point. BMW is a BMW. you drive an Audi (S4) and roll up next to a girl. Or even a friend. They MIGHT say “cool…nice Audi”. Now you roll up with a BMW. It’ll be “Wow…He drives a BMW??” You want attention? The M3 will get you more attention then the S4. It’s just in a different Class. You can compare BMW to a Benz. But if you even compare an Audi to a Benz..your outta your mind. M3 will always turn more heads then S4. Wait itll the new M3 comes out. That’ll even turn more heads then the RS4. I mean RS4’s a good car…Speed wise..But how many times do you really race? Do you get it to race? Or to show people that your the man?

P.S I currently own a 2004 M3, new Lexus GS, and SL 500. Off those 3 i love driveing the M3 the best. But if i want attention?? I go with SL. I want speed and fun?? I go with M3. If i need room?? Like appointments or Dinners? I go with GS. But Audi??? Never again!! Good for kids. Like from 18-21 that their parents get for them. But to compete with BMW? You gotta be nuts.

Hey Ken…are you of German heritage? Have you been to Germany? Bavaria in particular? If not, please go there…look at the vehicles on the road…Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen…my German relatives always tell me the same thing…”Germans make great beer and great automobiles”…clearly, they are correct. The difference is that the Germans feel that all four of the above makes of vehicles are great, and they choose them based on preference/how the vehicle feels to them, not based on who spent more or which “ladies you roll up on” making comments about them. Germans are proud people, and proud of their choices in beer and in vehicles. We, as Americans have the good fortune to choose as well, and yet all I see you guys arguing about is which one is faster, better, more comfortable, or has the higher status. Why not say, good for you BMWs are fantastic! They are all ridiculous cars, when you understand that the majority of Americans drive mid sized sedans like the Ford 500 the Toyota Camry, the Honda Accord, the Chrysler 300, etc etc…you are all the cream of the crop…pick one, be proud of your choice and simply pat the other German car owners on the back and say “well done”. Part of the reason I choose Audi is because the Quattro which was 15 years ahead of any other car maker and yet you call it a modded VW..so what? Where were BMW/Mercedes back in the 70s when Audi wasn’t following the rules and making breakthroughs that have stood the test of time and all other car makers have copied? Think about that for a moment…then the slogan for Audis…”Never Follow” will start to make sense.

3) It looks better.
4) It’s not a BMW .

So when the next M3 comes and it can beat the RS4 – we can also say that “it is a new car and the Audi is old – just like the BMWeeners says now? BMW always likes to compare their cars with some wayout sportscars, but when it is beaten they always come back and say: But the BMW is actually not a race car or in the same class – TIPICAL.

I drive a BMW and like the M3 better. However if M3 was same price or cheaper than definitely pick M3. An Audi is 5-10k cheaper. Now the comparison was unfair because:

1) The Audi RS4 has 100 more horsepower than the BMW M3
2) The Audi RS4 costs 11 grand more than the M3
3) The BMW M3 still handles better which affects ability to outrun the RS4 in
curves

Advantages of RS4
- Everyone drives a BMW and many have M3 in southern california so M3 and BMW are very common. The RS4 and S4 are unique and not that common

- all wheel drive.

I am waiting for the new BMW M3 to come out and will see which is better. That will be the real test. The new V8 BMW M3 against the V8 Audi RS4

I bet that the BMW wins the contest.

I do not know how many of you noticed the track CONDITIONS where both cars were tested!?!?!? There was H2O ALL around the track, DUHHH of course the RS4 will beat the M3 on acceleration. Even if it was dry, the RS4 would probably be a notch ahead of the M, but just a notch. Now, I would defenitely pick the M3, since deep in my heart there is only one make sitting, and yes it is called BMW. it is just more fun to drive, the RWD makes it a show off car as well as a civilized cope. People it is a matter of taste, I like one cologne the other guy likes a different one! That is all. Both cars are beautiful nice and fast. Audi is just not the car for me. Plus The RS4 doesn’t have a coupe!! I have personally sat in teh new RS4. It was on display in the Munich airport, or was it anoter city?! It just happened that I traveeld at that time so I had te hchance to sit in teh RS4. It impressed me a lot, but totell you the truth, the old RS4 the combi (wagon, for the amerikans) is my absolute favorite audi. As forthe M3 I have driven 3 different M3’s and boyyy , it is not the car it is the feeling you get when u drive one. So good luck to everybody who can affor to buy one of those!!

Ohh I just forgot!!!!!!!!! I certainly hope that BMW sticks to its inline Six cylinder for the future, although unlikely, but I hope they do. After all that is what makes the bmw a BMW !!! it is the inline SIX that makes that distinctive sound, never to be mistaken!! If the six’s goes and the V8 comes,it will be a bit of a disappointment! All i can say is, I will miss my sweet SIX ;-( but i will be true to the make and always buy/love BMW.!
