Dyno time with the Shelby Mustang GT500

08/18/2006, 1:56 PM

By admin

The team at Evolution Performance in Aston, PA put together a teaser for their upcoming video on the Shebly Mustang GT500. While viewers don’t get to see any hard numbers, the footage of this Shelby thrashing around on the dyno should be plenty entertaining to fans of the car. Video after the jump…

I’m sorry, I had to come back again with another coment

Should the car be shaking and shivering like that every time he shifts at redline?
I haven’t seen any car transfer all that force like that before.
This car is so crude. See, thats the thing with American Car Manufactures, they are so focused on putting as much power in a car, all they are about is HP… and they ignore the rest that makes the car more well rounded. I personaly think that they should stop this numbers game and thinking that a consumer will not pay a little more for better suspention or better interior, I believe they will. But apprently Ford thinks America is inlove with high HP numbers ONLY… I know they are wrong. Whats stopping me from buying this car over the current M3 or S4 even though it is pushing sooo much HP is just cuz I know they haven’t thought of everything else. Now the Mustang brand is so diluted with the Hertz and the GT Shelby model, California model, etc.

Actually, guys, any car with a large amount of torque will shake like that (except automatics don’t shake as much)… even a manual Civic will shake. The only difference is that the more the car ‘jumps’ is due to increased torque.

The shaking wasn’t TOO bad, more than some others I’ve seen, but not crazy. Didn’t strike me as the best way to launch a car on a dyno though, every dyno pull I’ve seen they start normally, but I guess this was a 1/4 mile “simulation” for whatever that’s worth.

it shakes because a) they did a crap job strapping it down and b) this car has so much torque I’m surprised the engine didnt shot up from under the hood and landed 300ft away.

I hate when people like you complain about cars like this. Do you not understand what a muscle car is suppose to be? Its suppose to be a Big Powerfull engine in a cheap car. Its not suppose to have luxurious interior and with a muscle car its all about HP!!! the most bang for your buck. I think you need to go back to your lexus turn your seatwarmers on and be quite. Im gald you didnt buy this car because you wouldnt know what to do with it.

Why would u even compare this to the vette, they are not in the same category, the corvette is a 2 seater sports car, a more accurate comparison would be the Ford GT, not the mustang. Right now, the Mustang really has no other car to compart to, until the challenger and camaro comes.

The C6 Vette and the GT500 share a similar price performance ratio. I realize the Vette is a true sports car, but Car and Driver compared them for a big story recently. The Vette one.

The Challenger and Camaro will come in quite a bit cheaper.

Well they didn’t really strap it down right and you aren’t supposed to shift on a dyno. I have never even heard of a 1/4 simulation run on a dyno.

You just put the car in third or fourth gear and then gradualy increase the throttle.

I just wanna say that I thought the difference in the stock performance to the upgraded package was amazing, that pony was chommping at the bit to get moving. Im not a fan of fords ugly retro pony but i sure miss the bodies from the sn95 frames. I hope ford can get a better body on this new chasis before the 09 drop date of Camaro.

First of all Renton you are right on. They are in exactly the same price range therefore the same market for comparison. Yes they did compare the two of them and the vette beat it in every catagory. Jeeezzee even the much lower priced camaro is coming out with and IRS system why can’t ford figure this out ? are they just too cheap to do it or what ? They are going in reverse in technology as far as suspension goes. Fords taking this retro thing way too far they are even using 60’s suspension techniques. Also comparing the Corvette to the ford GT is nuts the Ford GT is more than twice the cost of the stock vette. Also and by the way The new Vette Z06 out performs the Ford GT for less than half the cost. However I do wish the Challenger was comning out with an IRS suspension like the camaro as that looks like a very interesting machine.

Now that I think about it, there are a couple of things missing from the GT500 that would make it a true GT500. Just in style:

– QUAD headlights. Two main lights and two inset lights right in the middle of the grille. The 1967 GT500 cars with the original inset highbeams are the best.

– Side scoops on the rear quarters and just behind the driver and passenger side windows. They did this to aid in brake cooling and also to funnel air into the cabin on A/C Delete cars. Maybe global warming has meant that even modern performance cars are unbearable without A/C :)

– The fiberglass hood (maybe carbon fiber now?) with two big intake vents. That hood just does it.

And sure… it can be argued that it’s all for style anyway but the GT500 is all ABOUT style in every way. Ford ought to set it right in the looks department.

Damn you people are ignorant.

The solid axle is a superior design for drag racing. It’s in the mustang because IRS will wheel-hop and break if you try to launch it with sticky tires. The live axle is in the car for a very good reason and you only betray your ignorance by comparing this car to the M3 or citicizing its handling.

It’s a MUSCLE CAR. If you don’t know what that is, then kindly go away. This car isn’t for you, so nobody wants to hear your opinion on it.

You all sound like a bunch of old ladies complaining about a performance car. “Oh, that doesn’t look comfortable! Oh, that won’t get good gas mileage! Oh, I can’t fit my grandchildren in there!”

08/18, 9:18 PM

It isn’t “low tech” if your purpose is to put down a lot of power at a launch without breaking and/or wheel hopping. It is in fact much better at that than IRS.

That was my entire point, which you missed, RC. Calling it “low tech” is just ignorance of its purpose.

Solid axles are only better then IFS/IRS at two things.

Hard core drag racing and by that I mean 1/4 miles times in the mid 10 range. All of those import drag cars seem to do just fine with IRS up until the point they hit 9.99 in the quarter. Just look at all of the bad ass supras and 240SX/Sylvias.

http://findfastcars.com/NHRARules.html

“After market axles and axle-retention device mandatory on any car running 10.99 (*6.99) or quicker and any car with locked differential. Cars running 10.99 (*6.99) or quicker that weigh more than 2,000 pounds (907 kg) with independent rear suspension must have swing axle differential replaced with conventional differential housing assembly.”

The other thing that solid axles are superior at is hard core rock crawling. By hard core rock crawling I mean…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaxpYgsCZU0

No IFS/IRS system can do that. Even the cross linked valve setup that Land Rover uses in the new air suspensions is not good enough at replicating a solid axle to do that kind of rock crawling.

-It handles ALOT better
-Just as fast 0-60
-Just as fast on 1/4mile
- way smaller engine
- better gas mileage
- has more rear passenger room
- can be driven in the snow/rain/winter(AWD)
- etc. etc. etc.

EVO IX MR

0-60 4.5

Quarter Mile 13.3 sec @ 103.4 mph

Passing 45-65 mph 2.5 sec

Braking, 60-0 mph 107 ft

600-Ft Slalom 69.8 mph avg

MT Figure Eight 25.4 sec @ 0.72 g avg

Lateral Acceleration 0.92 g avg

The GT500

0-60 4.5sec

1/4 mile 12.7 @116 mph

passing 45-65 1.9 secs

braking 60-0 110

600ft slalom 69.7 mph

But since the first time I saw the Mustang Prototype I was hoping for an musclecar like the Shelby(year before I was thinking on the saleen). I can drive a 500$ dollar car for the daily things I have to do, but I really want this car in my garage.
