Im not GM best fan or anything but everyone complains about GM using platforms to multiple (Soltice/Sky) cars but what about this. I mean this is basically a Volkswagen R32 with different clothes and exactly the same setup with 3.6 Ltr engine and 4wd, but everyone seems to love it.
As Piechrider (Ceo of Volkswagen) said “I would never buy a Audi seeing it is just a glorifird Volkswagen”.

the s3 doesn’t use the 3.2 liter v6 of the R32 (it might get a 3.6 soon, but it only uses a 3.2 now). it has a 2.0T boosted from the standard 200hp to 265hp.

My mistake the golf is a 3.2 ltr but I think this is the 3.6 Ltr version of the same engine. Te chassis and 4wd are still identical that includes the transmission (DSG Included).

The 1 Series looks more proportioned to me. Aesthetics aside, I think over in US the most people would pay for pocket rockets is as much as a VW GT. Any more would get you better cars for the freeway.

I`m driving every second day over 130mph on the AUTOBAHN. And its fully legal!
Please change your mind, or drive this **** SUV`s forever!

The 1 series has terrible proportions and poor details. The A3 is so much more accomplished as a piece of design

Stuart,
The A3 is built on a separate production line from VW’s Golf. Separate factory too. Only some switchgear is shared but even the engine has unique valve/cam components.
Tuning’s different, suspension is different, driving dynamics are different- so what’s the beef about a ‘glorified VW’? Appreciate your viewpoint but you should visit Germany and check out the Audi factory. It rocks!

That’s an interesting theory, Lyall, to justify the premium Audi charges…but the fact of the matter is the Golf/Rabbit/Jetta and the A3 all share the A5/PQ35 platform. You might as well save a bundle of money and get a R32. Audi is overpriced, and overall its not on par with BMW or Mercedes-Benz.
Your arguement is reminescent of rednecks I’ve encountered claiming a Camaro and Firebird are vastly different cars instead of accepting the fact that its all the same F body crap.

I’m an Audi fan, have always had Audis (currently on a 05 S4) but this new S3 really disappoints me for two reasons- the price, which is way too high for a hatch, and the engine, which in my opinion is too underpowered. 5.7 seconds?? A car this small should be around the lower 5’s/high 4’s That’s nothing to be proud of… seriously, the R32 is a much better choice if you’re in the market for a hot hatch. While the interior is fantastic, like all Audis, the exterior on this one seems a bit TOO understated. A little wider, lower stance wouldve helped a lot. I just dont think there is a need for an S3 in the market, it’s almost like Audi is milking the same tit too much- S3, S4, RS4, S-line A4, S6, S-line A6… How about keeping it simpler so that prices and market dont bleed from one end to the other? S4, S6, S8. Enough. All in all, I could think of 3 or 4 better choices in terms of price/power ratio. Lets hope this isnt another Q7 disaster for Audi.

A Lyall – The comment about Audi making glorified Volkswagens come from the CEO of the Volkwagen corporation, Bernd Pischetsrieder. He is the runninng the company as a whole including all brand (Volkwagen, Audi, Bentley, Lomborghini, Bugatti, Seat and Skoda).
For you to say you have to visit the factories to find the differences is plain stupid when the guy in charge or the damn company is saying they are the same cars.

And for those who say just get the R32. The latest generation golf is hideous. I’ve heard that VW is pulling the next generation golf forward 2 years because of lack of interest here in the states.

If the golf comes two years forward then all cars based on that chassis will do like THIS ONE. So Audi have brought a car out which will probably only last a couple of years, whats the point in that??????????

The current generation Golf GTi is superb, and arguably more fun to drive than the R32 because the back end is more active. There aren’t many hot hatches to touch it for quality and refinement.

wtf how can u think its got a 3.6ltr engine when the video plainly shows a 2.0 TURBO on the engine cover! and yes the r32 has a 3.2 not a 3.6. The 1 series is a hideous piece of ****e on wheels, albeit faster to 60 than the R32 but doesnt have the grip of a 4wd

WTF- 4wd may be better for grip but rear wheel drive is best for handling. Only the BMW has it so that would make the 1 series best drivers car

I should point out that Top Gear tested the R32 and the 1 series, the R32 beat out the BMW. Not only was it slightly faster ont he track they felt it handled better and had more room inside.
VW and Audi are not built in the same factory and are not the same car. The current GTI looks hidious to me even if it drives well its ugly as is the Jetta.
I do agree howeevr that I do not see peopel in the U.S. paying 41k for a S3. At that price I could get a nice 3 series or an A4. I feel they went a bit overboard with the turbo and really pushing the limits on that 2.0 engine to boost it to 265BHP. I much rather have the inline 6 of the BMW.
