Viper to move upmarket; Firepower nears approval

08/22/2006, 9:58 AM

By admin

Chrysler has decided to move the 2008 Dodge Viper slightly upmarket from its current price point, creating a gap for the Chrysler Firepower, reports the U.K.’s Car Magazine. The publication indicates the Firepower is moving ever closer to approval, echoing media reports from as early as January. At the Detroit auto show, Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda said the Firepower was still “on our agenda.” In May, the Canadian Auto Press reported the Firepower Concept was among Chrysler’s top considerations. If you’re not familiar with the concept vehicle, have a look at our gallery after the jump…

Looks likea poor man’s Aston Martin. Not bad in the looks department. Now all they have to do is avoid the mistakes they made with the Prowler and Crossfire and make it with an available 6 speed MANUAL transmission.

I liked this when it was first shown here a few years back. A nice design, bit of an Aston Martin in the rear (which is not a bad thing at all) This is the halo car Chrysler needs…

I like this too, however the name FIREPOWER is TEH GHEY! Whats the market for this car? Middle aged men in a mid life crisis and a case of erectile disfunction? Thats why there’s the Vette. “Firepower”…. thats so cheesy we need Mighty Mouse around.

4 vehicles are slated for this platform…

Viper ZC (2008 model year)
Firepower
*possible* ME-412
*possible* a Mercedes model.

These vehicles will utilize advanced manufacturing processes and materials (read: carbon composite a-la Diamondback) to be lighter, stronger, and more advanced.

Viper will innitially be ~650 hp ~650-700 torque, but the engine has been developed to easily be bumped to over 800 reliable hp.

Firepower will feature some variant of the Hemi, putting a minimum of 450hp to the ground, as much as 550hp could realistically be on tap.

Nice combination of power and class in the design. A refined Viper really. I like it from the pics but will reserve final judgement till I see it in the flesh.
That would be cool if the ME-412 became a reality.

The transmission on this platform is developed as rear transaxle-mounted; so producing the ME, Firepower, Viper, and SLR or Gullwing successor will allow for multiple engine layouts.

Shouldn’t they be moving the Dodge Viper down a little and place this Chrystler upscale? Dodge is the historic cheap brand while Chrystler is the pricier model. I like the looks of the concept and hope they can pull it off. The world needs more fast, pretty, expensive cars that I’ll never be able to afford (:

the front, it’s a design that make me think about a lot of plastic, because it doesn’t seem very “real”, just aconcept.then, american cars had always have a lot of chrome, but in this case, it seems again a fake stuff around the label. it don’t have the personality of a 300 C, which i like, and here in italy there are a lot, especially if you think it is big and “american”.

Nick, the Firepower is to battle the Vette, basically a Viper chassy with a hi-power v8. The Viper is still the pure, unaldultrated powerhouse sports car. They are trying to refine it to better compete with the 80-150k sports/exotic segment.

Brilliant. I hate to say it, but moves like this are making a Chrysler fan out of me. I’ve never really liked Chrysler cars because of their nototrius quality issues. But even quality issues seem to be diminishing. I think this is a beautiful car that would really be competeing against the BMW 6 series and the Porsche 911. If I remember correctly, they were thinking of a price point around 50-60k. So maybe moving the Viper up would make room for an elite model Firepower in the 70-80k range. I don’t really see this car competing with the Viper anyway in that it would be more refined… A businessman’s sports car.

It’s not bad for an American Sports car. if this car wants to ever make people drool, they need to lose that grill that chrysler seem to always slap on, keep it open lose the chrome and the edges are too sharp. What I really like is the rear, kind of like a only porsche.

The 300C SRT would have been on my shopping list if it weren’t for that deficiency. Please DCX, put a nice interior in this car, NOT walmart quality. At least match the cheapest of the german interiors (A4,3 Series, etc).

I actually saw this car at barret jackson this year. It is kinda aston martin very true but it sure looks nice to me. The front grill needs a little work it looks like a big ass grin on its face, but overall REAL REAL nice looking. it had the 6.1 hemi in it at barret jackson but I guess they could also put the new 6.6 hemi in it as well (good ideaa to offer both). I agree they definetly MUST offer a six speed manual with this as well and some kind of sports handling stiffer suspension package as options. Looks real good to me i will check this out if it comes out and i am on my third Vette now.. Bravo Mopar your starting to catch up a bit.. more than we can say for Ford..

Hemi power, Viper handling, less tacky than a Vette, under $50k. And it looks stunning in person, not at all plasticky (and not as Aston-like as you guys seem to think). The market for this car is non-mulleted guys who buy Vettes for the package but cringe at the looks and image. They ought to be able to do 10k a year without too much trouble. I’ll be buying one, assuming they offer it with a six-speed manual.

Wow, an Aston Martin front end, and a Porsche 928 rear end. Even the tail lights are 928 ish. If it had the rear quarter windows, it would be almost exactly a 928 rip off. It does strongly resemble a concept from Carrol Shelby a few years back in the over all appearance. Pretty nice even though it has no original design element.

Oh yeah and Dr. Z rules… it’s probably going to be more like 6 Aveos LOL. If this is going to slot somewhere around where the Viper is (or was when this comes out) it will probably be… 80,000$ (and Viper moved up some)? But then again that’s nothing more than a guess but still LOL

I’ve been saying for years the best thing that could happen to the viper is replacing the gigantic v10 with a high-output hemi… could result in lower weight, better mileage, better sound, tighter moment of inertia (b/c if set back at the same distance, the CG of the engine would be further back), less heat soak, lower build costs, more conservative torque and lighter weight could mean smaller tires (could mean lighter wheels> less unsprung weight>better ride, more predictable handling)

My concern is that as a chrysler it won’t be built with low weight in mind and may actually end up weighing more than a viper, which would be a real shame…

At any rate, it’ll be better finished than a viper, at lower cost… so it’d pose a more legit comparison to other high-end GTs, like maybe a jag xk. But I’m hoping ‘vette territory

there’s a few concepts out with hemi’s and viper trans… namely the challenger, but also several hotrods. it’ll happen.

I hope they keep it priced low enough that the firepower will be a direct replacement for the crossfire. then it’d be a legit
