Last week, German automaker Volkswagen hosted representatives from Chinese automaker BYD at its Wolfsburg, Germany, headquarters to discuss the possibility of a partnership to create hybrid and electric vehicles powered by lithium batteries. Though no official partnership was announced, the automakers signed an informal memorandum of understanding to explore the possibility of a partnership.
“Volkswagen will consistently expand its successful BlueMotion Technologies. Hybrids and electric vehicles will play an increasingly important role, of course. Particularly for the Chinese market, potential partners such as BYD could support us in quickly expanding our activities,†VW board member Ulrich Hackenberg said in a statement.
BlueMotion is VW’s trademark name that encompasses all of its efficiency-oriented vehicles.
The Chinese experienced VW’s Golf twinDrive hybrid and a prototype electric vehicle at the automaker’s Electric Technology Center.
