Volkswagen has officially taken the wraps off the Golf R — a successor to the R32 variant of the previous-generation Golf. Now powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder, the Golf R promises to build on the performance of the R32.
The R32’s 3.2-liter V6 has been replaced with a lighter 2.0-liter turbocharged unit delivering 270 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Sending power to all four wheels, the Golf R accelerates from 0-60 in 5.7 seconds when equipped with a manual transmission, with Volkswagen’s optional DSG gearbox dropping that time to 5.5 seconds.
Despite that power, the Golf R will still return a respectable 27.6mpg in the European cycle.
Highlights include LED lights, a new wheel design, R badging, twin exhaust, and a more aggressive body kit.
Much of the underlying technology is shared with the Scirocco R, which will not be offered in the United States. Luckily, the Golf R is headed for North American dealerships.

Looking good, pretty disappointed in the performance though. 0-60 in 6.5 seconds? A Subaru WRX with similar specs (2.5l Turbo 265hp AWD 3200lb Curb Weight) can do the same sprint in close to 5.3 seconds. At least the R20 looks a hell of a lot better!

Zero, they have to finally put some different between the Golf and the TT. who would buy the TT-S (from which the golf R gets its engine) if they had the exact same specs? the TT-S makes that sprint in 4.9

I’ll be honest – I’m not a huge fan of the new GTI from the front but this is awesome! I hope it comes packaged like the last R32 loaded to the gills standard (with the bs things I like including dual zone climate control) and it makes for an awesome daily driver. It just looks more special to me than the R32 did – which didn’t look any better than my GTI IMO and I had a hard time justifying paying $30k + for some special metal interior bits, the VR6 and AWD which really was it. This I can see paying that money since alot isn’t offered on the new GTI (to make it cheaper).

Are you sure the Golf R has the same engine as the TT-S? TT-S is a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected inline Four. The article implies the R is getting a lighter 6.
None the less, it’’s cool. The Scirocco is still a better package. I would have purchased a Scirocco if it had come state side, I wouldn’t pay all that money for a Golf.

With 200hp GTI model, it goes like 6.7 sec per multi-mags in last few years. Why pay more for a new R-model for a mere 0.2 second quicker????? I really like this R-model. Just too bad that the 265 hp won’t put this R-model in low 5 seconds range or something…..

GUYS, THE 0-60 IS A MANUFACTURE ESTIMATE. Anyone knows that these are ALWAYS conservative. Under promise and over deliver. They would rather say the car does 0-60 in 6.5 when it does it in 5.8 than say it does 0-60 in 5.5 and it does 5.8.
The MKV GTI is as fast as 6.0 to 60 (Car and Driver). The average is 6.3 (Automobile, Road & Track, Motor Trend) The SLOWEST I have seen it is 6.7 and that is the manufacturer claim.
Expect this car to run 5.5 to 60 as the R32 that it replaces did 5.7 or 5.8 with 15 less hp and more than that in torque.
Calm down and wait to see. With the EXACT same engine as the TT-S it will not disappoint. Lets just hope they bring it to the states with a 4-door option. If not, I will stick with the A3.

On top of VW underestimating their 0-60 times, if the R is (and I really hope it is) still AWD, then it’s likely it’ll weigh about 150lbs more than the normal GTI, which might account for the difference too. But to be quite honest, this 0-60 time leads me to think that it won’t be AWD, hence why such a small difference.
It’s common for front wheels-front engine cars to hit a “wall” when it comes to 0-60 when adding more power, and this could be such a case.

Anyone know the difference in curb weight compared to the R32? I took that for a nice long test drive one time, and it felt “heavy” for lack of a better word. Underpowered compared to similarly priced vehicles, but that should be addressed by the smaller motor, so the R might be an interesting car.

@ krautninja – My mistake however you are still in the wrong by saying that it SHOULD be a detuned TT-S. It is 100% THE SAME engine with the same numbers for both torque and hp. It too, the R20 that is, will use 4motion (Haldex) AWD, however not the same as Quattro AWD. That is the only major mechanical difference between the TT-S and the R20 (Golf R). If the TT-S does 0-60 in under 5.0 seconds, which I have seen 4.7 for the fastest so far, than you can be sure that this R20/Golf R will be well un 6 flat. Most likely 5.3 to 5.6. Just my VERy exducated guess.

So basically, they’re giving us the VW equivalent of the Euro S3.
Rather than saddling us with the old 2.0 and FWD on the Passats, this powertrain (with DSG) is what VW should be offering us. I’d gladly switch. Like “alsvw” said, the V6’s have great exhaust notes, but a powertrain that is just as fast with better mpg is a good trade off.

Jake, take it easy, don’t have a heart attack! Who, but teenagers, give a sh!i about 2 seconds or tenth of second in 0-60? How that changes anyone life? I am sure this car will drive much better then T32, for one simple reason: better weight distribution with 4 banger. As far as AWD: real man don’t need AWD when you have 3 pedals and front wheel drive.

I’ll answer my own question in case anybody else was interested. From what I gather, the 4 banger is about 400lbs lighter than the 3.2 was (which seems excessive to me, but I’ve found that number on a few sites). The DSG however, is about 100lbs heavier than than the 6-speed was.
So assuming ZERO other changes (bad assumption), the R20 should be a few hundred pounds lighter than the R32, and might actually perform.

@RaineMan -
A go-cart with a 420 hp crate engine can do better than the Cobalt, but does that mean you are going to go out and buy one? If you like the Cobalt with this option, great, go out and get it, but these are two different cars. You might as well compare a Porsche to a Camaro – both good cars, but you are in different leagues in terms of interior fit and finish and exterior dynamics as well as civilized ride quality. So you can get a Cobalt that’s quicker – but you’re still going to have a low-rent car interior and an exterior of a car that 16 year old fat teenage fake-blond girls drive and simply look like a teenage douch-bag instead of a 30-something douchebag with money in the GTI-R.
Is it going to be the GTI-R here or the Golf-R? It’s a dumb move to not use the GTI name…

I’ve never liked the look of the mark 5 GTI.The mark 6 at least has the Scirocco front end. But frankly the Scirocco is a much better looking car. In fact the new Volvo C30 is a much better looking car. If the optional sport package on the C30 R is in any way decent I would take it over a GTI or R any day of the week. The body of this car, other then the front end is “frumpy” looking. It’s essentially nothing more then a box with a nice looking front end. Even the new VW Polo is a way better looking car then the Golf. I firmly believe they should limit this car to a 4dr only. Anything 2dr should “only” be a Scirocco!!

But yes as much as it sucks for VW that the little ol cobalt SS for like 10k less is just as fast, the Golf/GTI is definitely a much nicer ride.

it’ll be interesting to see the final price of this thing, and whether the folks who road test ‘em say its worth the money…the r32, from the reviews i read, seemed to be a great high speed all weather cruiser, but not a stoplight racer…more of a gt car, due to weight issues mostly…i dig the concept…4wd hatch w/good power and torgue, good interior, high quality look (high quality build debatable), but is it worth the premium over a gti or ms3, etc? we’ll see…
