This car will be fantastic if only they bring it. Has same drivetrain as the Audi, about the same weight (check German web sites) and conservative 5.3 0-100. Comparing to Subies is silly if using daily driver as no comparison in fit, finish, ride, handling and steering (not to mention styling!!). Anyone complaining about reliability is likely behind the times also; check CR for Rabbit recent reliability. Please bring so I can dump my X5 for a real car in the winter.

Please bring the 4 door R to the US. Americans are tall and fat, with more than one kid, and at the same time, we love performance. If this R doesn’t live up to its suggested performance for the price, VW should stick to great TDI’s.

speaking of saturns assfnck,
I have a 2007 saturn aura xr that is a complete piece of SH!T
since it’s so good, why is it that I get constant abs, and air bag lights coming on at least 3 times a month??
Last month, it was at my saturn dealer for 2 frikin weeks!!! Luckily for saturn, the lemon law is no longer affective(my dads lawyer told us), but driving it through the damn dealership might do the trick! This car is an embarrassment just as much as talking to you is!

I have to admit that the new VW brand face has grown on me. I wasn’t that impressed with it at first, but I am really starting to feel it now. The overall design looks a little bland, but it does have some nice detailing that spiffs it up a bit. I think this is one of those vehicles that you have to see in person to fully appreciate. At least I give VW credit for defaulting on the restrained side of design, unlike what Mazda did with the 2010 Mazda3 MPS (which is disappointedly hideous).

I have to agree with you there. The WTX is awful, bordering on the atrocious in packaging department. The transmission gear count is just one of a long list of “no thanks” when looking at Subaru – no chain driven valve train, no direct injection, no double clutch, etc. But it will run circles around VW in terms of reliability.

the wrx looks like ass…some people can get over that, but not me…i don’t want to pay 30k for something i think is obscenely ugly, even if it has good performance numbers…not to mention, subie doesn’t even have a 6 speed for the wrx, right? they seem to be 5 years behind in transmissions…

it’ll be interesting to see the final price of this thing, and whether the folks who road test ‘em say its worth the money…the r32, from the reviews i read, seemed to be a great high speed all weather cruiser, but not a stoplight racer…more of a gt car, due to weight issues mostly…i dig the concept…4wd hatch w/good power and torgue, good interior, high quality look (high quality build debatable), but is it worth the premium over a gti or ms3, etc? we’ll see…

lol @ Raineman, actually a bone stock Cobalt SS turbocharged is capable of doing 0-60 in 5.5 seconds, and the 1/4 in less than 14 seconds. It’s been confirmed on css.net that someone did 13.7 (or .6?) on stock tires with one.

But yes as much as it sucks for VW that the little ol cobalt SS for like 10k less is just as fast, the Golf/GTI is definitely a much nicer ride.

I’ve never liked the look of the mark 5 GTI.The mark 6 at least has the Scirocco front end. But frankly the Scirocco is a much better looking car. In fact the new Volvo C30 is a much better looking car. If the optional sport package on the C30 R is in any way decent I would take it over a GTI or R any day of the week. The body of this car,other then the front end is “frumpy” looking. It’s essentially nothing more then a box with a nice looking front end. Even the new VW Polo is a way better looking car then the Golf. I firmly believe they should limit this car to a 4dr only. Anything 2dr should “only” be a Scirocco!!

A go-cart with a 420 hp crate engine can do better than the Cobalt, but does that mean you are going to go out and buy one? If you like the Cobalt with this option, great, go out and get it, but these are two different cars. You might as well compare a Porsche to a Camaro – both good cars, but you are in different leagues in terms of interior fit and finish and exterior dynamics as well as civilized ride quality. So you can get a Cobalt that’s quicker – but you’re still going to have a low-rent car interior and an exterior of a car that 16 year old fat teenage fake-blond girls drive and simply look like a teenage douch-bag instead of a 30-something douchebag with money in the GTI-R.

Is it going to be the GTI-R here or the Golf-R? It’s a dumb move to not use the GTI name…

I’ll answer my own question in case anybody else was interested. From what I gather, the 4 banger is about 400lbs lighter than the 3.2 was (which seems excessive to me, but I’ve found that number on a few sites). The DSG however, is about 100lbs heavier than than the 6-speed was.

So assuming ZERO other changes (bad assumption), the R20 should be a few hundred pounds lighter than the R32, and might actually perform.

I am sure this car will drive much better then T32, for one simple reason: better weight distribution with 4 banger. As far as AWD: real man don’t need AWD when you have 3 pedals and front wheel drive.

I’m still not impressed. A Stage 1 Cobalt SS Turbo can easily out muscle this thing… and costs a lot less.

For $35k I’d rather have a WRX or a Camaro.

THEY RIPPED OFF AUDI FOR THAT INTERIOR… which is not a bad thing.

So basically, they’re giving us the VW equivalent of the Euro S3.

Rather than saddling us with the old 2.0 and FWD on the Passats, this powertrain (with DSG) is what VW should be offering us. I’d gladly switch. Like “alsvw” said, the V6’s have great exhaust notes, but a powertrain that is just as fast with better mpg is a good trade off.

now this is more like it vw. a car that is under 6.0 seconds in the 0-60 race. this sounds like a great gti. but i will mis that vr6 exhaust note. nothing else sounds that pure…
but, i’m sure the new turbo 4cyl it will not have that buzz buzz jap sound of the import world. thank god for that…

@ krautninja – My mistake however you are still in the wrong by saying that it SHOULD be a detuned TT-S. It is 100% THE SAME engine with the same numbers for both torque and hp. It too, the R20 that is, will use 4motion (Haldex) AWD, however not the same as Quattro AWD. That is the only major mechanical difference between the TT-S and the R20 (Golf R). If the TT-S does 0-60 in under 5.0 seconds, which I have seen 4.7 for the fastest so far, than you can be sure that this R20/Golf R will be well un 6 flat. Most likely 5.3 to 5.6. Just my VERy exducated guess.

Anyone know the difference in curb weight compared to the R32? I took that for a nice long test drive one time, and it felt “heavy” for lack of a better word. Underpowered compared to similarly priced vehicles, but that should be addressed by the smaller motor, so the R might be an interesting car.

@krautninja: I’m sorry, but im fairly certain that you are misinformed. The R will follow the tradition of its MkIV and Mk V predecessors and include 4motion (AWD). Otherwise, they most likely would just call it a GTI plus or something.

This car will be all-wheel drive. that is mostly why they are calling it the Golf R (probably GTI R or R20 in U.S.) , because it is succeeding the R32. Otherwise, they would probably just call it the Golf plus or GTI Plus names they were considering, according to rumors.
