Spied: Volkswagen Golf/Rabbit VI

07/30/2007, 1:27 PM

By Nick

Spies have caught the next-generation Volkswagen Golf/Rabbit in testing. Both the two- and four-door versions were photographed.

Although sales of the new 2007 model Rabbit just recently started here in the United States, European sales of the Golf have apparently been lagging, and manufacturing time is nearly twice as long as other cars in its class.

Recent reports suggest orders from management are to simplify and shorten the assembly process, and produce the next “generation” on the current but updated platform – with, of course, considerable cost-cutting savings. And, in the process, giving it a more exciting and slightly more aggressive look.

Sources close to Volkswagen believe the next generation Golf will reach European dealerships in late 2008, or 2009 – but American’s will have to wait a bit longer to purchase what will commonly be known nearly everywhere as the Golf VI.

For some reason the images aren’t showing up on the screen, although they still link to a full screen picture that I can see. It may just be my computer though =\

Looks a little more Euro than the outgoing one… I like the current one more, the grill and plastic bar on the side seems cheap, but nothing really new aside it’s not color coded. Seems like they have quite a bit of equipement or something in the back…

I don’t see any 4 door spy pics but from what I do see which isn’t much, the car looks very similar to the current model. I also hate the name Rabbit. I wish the United States would have the name Golf like the rest of the world. Hopefully this new model will address the problems the Golf V has.

Looks like the pics were taken at Death Valley. Hopefully the Golf VI goes on a diet.

We can’t see any details. The way they’ve camouflaged it, it’s just shouting out: Look, an unreleased car. Take lots of pictures NOW!!

Too much camo to make a fair judgment. The Golf has been getting too fat though. Needs to lose some weight.

This is like putting a new set of braces on an ugly chick. The metal may sparkle more when she smiles, but you still can’t bear to look at her (unless you’re drunk).

I think the design is fine the way it is. It just xxxxing came out, what’s the xxxxing rush to redesign the exterior?

Certainly evolutionary, yet it appears to be slightly more ‘muscular’…

This looks more like a mk5.5 to me.. other than the addition of new fasciae and the mk3 crease line down the side (ugly step way backwards) it looks pretty much the same.
