Volkswagen took the opportunity to take the wraps off its planet-saving alternative at Geneva, in the form of a Golf TDI Hybrid. VW claims the Golf is capable of just 89g/kg of CO2 emissions and returns 69mpg (Imperial) at the pumps thanks to a 220V electric motor and 1.2 liter inline-3 diesel. Drive is delivered via VW’s newest 7-speed DSG transmission.

In regular driving, the motor powers the hatchback, with the diesel firing up only when the throttle is generously applied or at highway speeds. Or of course when the battery is drained, but thus far, there is no word on electric range alone. Most of the hybrid tricks are used, such as regenerative braking, shutting the engine down when stopped, and aerodynamic tweaks in the form of lower ride height, a unique grille, smaller intakes and front splitter from a Golf GTI Edition 30. The motor also replaces the alternator and starter.

The diesel engine is rated at 73 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, with the electric motor producing 27 hp and 103 lb-ft.

While the car show is technically a concept, VW hints it will likely see the light of day in the future.
