If Volkswagen can get access to the advanced EGR technology Ricardo in the UK developed to clean up diesel exhaust, we could see the Golf GTD (and possibly a "Jetta GLD") in the USA within two years. Can you imagine performance almost the same as the Golf GTI but with fuel economy almost 40 mpg? I'll take it! :)

tdi is a very good engine for tuning- u can get round 220 hp from it without any major modifications... and that would eat the 2.0 petrol at any road economicaly :)

nickkop, I was referring to regular Golf (Rabbit) motor stateside. With 5 pots it shakes a bit more then most cars with 4 and that was my point. By comparison, VW diesel you can hardly hear the difference (well you can if you listening).

Rafa LL- No need to be a dilldozer, but when you consider that most other cars this size average around 11 seconds 0-60, and most people are actually going for something smaller... Maybe they don't think 8.1 seconds is quick, I think their original point was it's quicker than most everything else.

This would just be too expensive on my pocket. If they could sell this for around $25,000, they might move a couple hundred of this trim a year in the US. More importantly, they just need a good, refined diesel in the US for under $20k (like the Jetta but cheaper).

Wow, 0-60 times are so important. Really, 8.1 seconds is really good, I don't really care about straight line speed. They should bring it to the US. The Jetta TDi doing good, so why not bring the Golf version here.

@ TornadoGTI “People in Euopre look at cars differently. They actaully think 8.1 is quick.”
You should shut up, think, and after shutting up and thinking, talk.

-The interior still gets the necessary attention from the necessary people.

this car is not meant for the US. The GTD has been around since the Golf 1 , this is not something new from VW. A lot of people need a diesel car for long commutes , what's wrong in wanting some handling to make the road less boring ? this is not a hot hatch , it doesn't pretend to be one , consider it as a Grand Touring Golf.

@ TornadoGTI "People in Euopre look at cars differently. They actaully think 8.1 is quick."- that's just dumb.

*facepalm*

People, why do 0-60 numbers seem to like define a car. Diesels aren't usually that great from 0-60, but once you're moving all that extra torque is great for highways and some city driving cause you don't have to downshift nearly as often to pass people. Plus, since when is a race determined by initial acceleration?

8 sec to 60 and 44 mpg, while respectable is not outstanding. Houw about an Altima Hybrid which does sub 7-sec to 60 and gets 38 mpg. I like that better.

This car looks nice, as I own a current GTI, of course I am a fan, but I am getting a little put off by Europes attempt to bring small, budget, fuel efficient cars, that do well in Europe to the states. GTD, TT1.8, 335d, among other. They just don't work the same in the states. People in Euopre look at cars differently. They actaully think 8.1 is quick. Many of the places that have these cars dont even have any room to go 60. This car is for the cities.

I think it is useless. My GTI does 6 sec to 60 and gets 31 mpg highway, what else is there?

And I think what borat means about the shakes is the idle and driving of the 5-cyl by vw. That engine is terrible. He!!, I will just say it, any engine with odd number cyl. just sucks. That thing bounces and wheezes like an early 90's diesel.

borat.... what 5 cylinder?? The GTI does not have a 5 Cylinder... as of currently. maybe in a future R25T

The base Golf and Jetta do.

the GTI and GTD both have 2.0 liter inline 4, directly injected, and turbocharged engines.

only difference in engines is that the GTD is Diesel (lower engine speed, lower horsepower, more torque, more efficient)

and the GTI is a gasoline engine (higher engine speed, lower compression, more horsepower, less torque, less efficient)

I am for this car. If you want real sports car speed, you know where to go. If you want a car that gets 44mpg and still handles, and looks a little stimulating, this is a nice little package. Besides, I bet this thing is massively tuneable.
