Volkswagen has long sold a drop-top version of its Golf compact in the old country but has never extended the open air treatment to the GTI. However, a new report suggests that situation will soon change, with VW set to unveil a GTI Convertible at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

AutoExpress reports that the GTI Convertible, first revealed as a concept (pictured above) back in June, will be shown in production form in Geneva. The car will essentially be the swan song for the MkVI Golf range before the MkVII arrives at the end of the year.

As such, the GTI Convertible stands a decent chance of retaining some of the special hardware found on the concept, which includes a lowered coil-over suspension as well as aesthetic touches such as piano black wheel arches, motorsports-inspired front and rear fascias and 19-inch wheels.

Power will likely come from normal GTI’s 2.0-liter, 200 horsepower turbo four shifting through either a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Sadly, VW is not expected to send the open air GTI to the United States.
