Volkswagen GX3 headed for production; Lotus connection?

03/15/2006, 3:23 PM

By admin

A prototype version of the Volkswagen GX3 Concept — first shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show — was caught in testing by spy photographer Christa Lehman. The photograph was reportedly taken at a Lotus testing facility in England. According to Edmunds, the GX3 may be a joint venture by the two companies, and may be sold worldwide. When Volkswagen first showed the concept, it insisted the car-motorcycle crossover would be built, and said it would sell for $17,000.

If this is actually built and sold for under $20,000 I will buy one. NO doubt. Similar to a Caterham but with a very reasonable price and a good dealership network to service it.

yeah i noticed the weird wheels too. i think it’s for anti rolling? I’m guessing it’s a hybrid between a motor cycle and an automobile so they have to balance that car like a bicycle?

Guys guys…the training wheels are for testing tip limits when pushed to the edge. They won’t exist in any production model.

No, I don’t know of anyone taking deposits as of yet as VW has not committed to production, although I think that may be what they are about to do.

I have been compiling a list of those interested by way of http://www.vwvortex.com and have forwarded the list on a regular basis to the Moonraker team (the VW group responsible for the GX3). They are adding that list to their own database. At some point they will contact those in the database for what we all are hoping is good news and a production date.

If you would like to be included, my email address is

kevine@santabarbaravw.com

Email me your name and address. I will send you a copy of the GX3 Press release CD at no cost to you. Your name and address will be forwarded to the Moonraker team and
be added to the database of people interested in the GX3.

Given that a Honda Goldwing sells for about $18k … and a trike mod could add another $6k; this might be the next move for geezer bikers too. Add heated seats and plenty of storage and you’ve got a segment killer.

It’s would be nice to see VW break the Me-Too’ism that goes for creativity in the auto biz.
