Volkswagen’s Jetta has long been its bread and butter sedan in North America, and since it’s not a big player elsewhere, the next-generation model set to debut for 2011 will probably be a little more tailored for the North American market. Our illustration, based on what we’ve been able to discern from tight-lipped VW so far, shows a clear familiar resemblance to the new Golf.
Earlier this year, our spy photographers caught up with the Jetta. Internally known as NCS – or New Compact Sedan – this updated Jetta will be built on a re-engineered fifth-generation Jetta platform. The new model has also been referred to as the Jetta VI.
The Jetta name will likely be carried over, and assembly will continue to take place at Volkswagen’s Puebla, Mexico, plant, but the new Jetta will measure in slightly longer and a bit wider. Volkswagen plans to sell 160,000 units annually as it hopes to convert some potential Corolla and Civic buyers with its lower base price.
Although cost-cutting measures may be obvious compared to the current Jetta, there is speculation that an all-wheel drive option may be offered.
A diesel will certainly be part of the equation, but the future of Volkswagen’s 2.5-liter five-cylinder is up in the air. Not as fuel-efficient as rivals’ four-bangers, its main advantage to the German automaker is the low cost of producing it.

From the front…your new corporate nose straight off the euro-market Golf Estate. The rear end is a copy/paste job from Kia Optima, perhaps just a tiny bit edgier.

Not bad overall. You can really see the CC influence in the profile. The rear looks a bit Audi/Kia Forte in nature, but since those have good designs it works. Glad to hear they may finally replace the 5 cyl.
AWD option could really help sell some cars too.

You must have not been in the VW loop – that’s the NA version of the Golf Wagon too, it’s been redone to look this way already for the 2010 MY and is already in showrooms.

Sois this just a facelift or are they doing more to it than what it looks? This is the most confusing thing ever! If they facelift it – look for the 2.5L to stay, if not, who knows. I somehow doubt this thing will be much different than the new Golf’s interior and engine options as the Wagon has already been redone.
As for the “cost-cutting measures may be obvious compared to the current Jetta” that’s scary…

Looks a little too bland… and (as tough as it is to tell from a photo/rendering), it looks too darn big.
It should have more Passat CC influence, or better yet, more Scirocco influence in the styling department.
I also hope that it doesn’t get any bigger than the current model – some of us LIKE small cars. If we wanted a larger car, we’d get a Passat.
Hopefully they are a little off in this rendering and the actual car ends up looking better.

I like the size of Jetta (a bit larger then Civic/Corolla/Mazda3) yet smaller then bigger siblings of theirs. \ I like this styling as well (I don’t like CC looks). However, did anyone drove Jetta? I hope they put some soul into that dead steering wheel. It’s more alive on a Penske rental truck. Completely dead in the center and you can turn 20 degrees any way before car acknowledges anything. And steering is the good future of this car! The bad one is that 5 cylinder engine that sounds and shakes worse then a diesel. Engine (and steering) is probably ok on roads in Mexico, where you can confuse all that commotion for road blemishes, but even in pothole covered NJ you can’t confuse that NVH with road bump(s).

I don’t think this rendering is terribly accurate.. though the headlights and grille will most definitely follow the look of the new Golf and Golf/Jetta wagon, it’s obvious from the spy shots that the hoodline slope has been seriously flattened out, and the hood itself looks to have a fender wrapover cutline similar to that on the CC, Tiguan and Routan. I am also exremely hopeful that the rear is wrong too.. those taillights are straight off the Audi A4!

VW needs to either make the 2.5 litre gasoline engine more efficient (maybe with direct injection?) or ditch it for a new 4 cylinder if they are serious about competing in this segment.

im with zoom…Not at fan of that A4 tail. it looks great on the A$ …not on this jetta rendering. AND VW needs to made up their mind. Originally it was said the new jetta would be small than the current one to better compete with the Corolla/Civic. this piggy just keeps on growing. As for the rest of the design, Im glad its starting to look Euro again and not so Corolla ish.

The Jetta needs to be put on a diet, but what really sucks is that the new model looks kind of like the Gen 4 Jetta, which was kind of an anemic car compared with its current version. I prefer the Diesel model because of its better mileage.

There is a pronounced “kink” (an almost “Hoffmeister”) of the rear quarter window (not that simulated Civic window) as based on this 8/28 spy pic showing most of the rear quarter window.

all VW-s/Audis need a diet plan….with every generation they get fatter. I think thats why they chose to go back to the Golf name from teh Rabbit. Rabbit implies lean and athletic. Golf implies….a fat middle-aged man pretending like he can play a “sport” (golf).

I totally agree with the Kia/Audi esq lights in the back. They could do more to this car in profile though. And if VW knows whats good for them, they will NOT change the name of this car. Look what happened when they decided to change the name of the Golf to the Rabbit. The plan didn’t turn out the way they wanted it to. Anyhow, I have high hopes for V-dub

Now matter what VW makes, it will never be so bland and boring as a camry. VW will stay on top for a few years. But, toyota will have to change its whole line up of crap cars to even think about taking over VW again.
This new VW looks like a version of the A4.

Tell me swamprat, aside from the 2.slow base engine, what else was anemic about the Mk IV? As far as styling goes, I’m glad the rendering looks more like the Mk IV, as it has infinitely more character than the Mk V.
The Mk V looks like what it was intended to be – a Corolla Deluxe. (When compared to the Corolla it boasted a more powerful base engine, slightly better interior appointments, it was slightly better looking, and had a slightly higher price tag.)
On the other hand, the Mk IV was from a time that VW thought it could go upscale and compete as a Tier 1 luxury brand…effectively being the poor man’s BMW. Remember the Phaeton and W8 B5?
As time has shown, this strategy was not to be and the Mk V reflects this.

It looks really good compared to the Mk 5. Unless you are a troll or a dwarf no one over 5′5″ can fit in the current Jetta’s back seats if a 6′ plus person is up front. Sometimes bigger is better! Just dump the 5 cylinder and give us the TDI as the standard engine.
