When the current Volkswagen Jetta debuted in 2011, critics weren't sold on the car's interior quality, which felt like a downgrade from the previous model. Although the cabin hasn't seemed to hurt sales (which increased 43.9 percent last year), VW is still addressing the issue by adding a number of higher-rent materials and new standard features to the Jetta for the 2013 model year.

Mid-level SE models gain new metallic dashboard and door trim, power-reclining front seats and leather adorning the steering wheel, shift knob, and handbrake lever. The GLI's soft-touch dashboard migrates to all SEL-trim models (it was previously available only on the SEL Premium), while a two-tone black and beige interior color scheme and a six-way power driver's seat are also now standard SEL equipment.

Though a navigation system was standard on all SELs last year, for 2013 buyers must upgrade to the new SEL with Navigation, which replaces the SEL Premium trim, to get nav. The new trim also adds a Fender audio system.

The GLI and TDI models are also the recipients of a few updates for the new model year. GLIs equipped with the DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox get the GTI's launch control system, while the GLI Autobahn with Navigation trim now includes a rearview camera and Bi-Xenon headlights with LED. All TDIs gain the SE's interior goodies in addition to a new iridium trim on the dash and door panels, while the diesel also gets a bit of bling in the form of a chrome radiator grille and chrome window trim.

The 2013 Jetta lineup will arrive in dealerships later this month; stay tuned for pricing information. The new Jetta Hybrid is set for a fall launch, while an efficient 1.8-liter turbo four is expected to replace the current 2.5-liter inline-five at some point next year.
