The fifth incarnation of Volkswagen's quintessential mid-range car was originally introduced at the LA Auto Show in January 2005 -- the second VW ever to debut at an American show after the New Beetle and a reflection of the importance of the sedan in the region, while Europe and other areas are more dependent on the Golf hatchback.

Although other countries are given the option of several engine options (including diesel), the US version of the sedan is offered with just one model, a 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine that generates 170 horsepower at 5700 rpm. Peak torque reaches 177 pound-feet at 4250 rpm.

Transmission choices are also more modest than the performance-minded GLI version. The standard Jetta sedan is paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed Tiptronic automatic with a manual shift override.

2008 brings more power, renamed trim levels

While it varies sharply from the 2007 model, the 2008 Jetta is primarily a simplification: where multiple engines were available in the past, the 170 hp engine is now common for all versions. The GLI is now considered a separate model in the automaker's stable and is not matched by a slightly detuned 2.0T.

Buyers now also have just three model levels to choose from. The base Jetta S reflects Volkswagen's new safety-first approach with front- and side-impact airbags, anti-lock brakes, and traction control. Moving up to the SE adds electronic stability control as well as larger 16-inch alloy wheels, a premium sound system with a six-disc CD changer and SIRIUS satellite radio, and a fold-flat front passenger seat. Cosmetically, it brings extra chrome and molded door trim, leather for the handbrake and steering wheel, as well as leatherette seating surfaces.

A top model, the SEL, is one of the few Volkswagen cars today to come with the Tiptronic automatic transmission as standard. A multi-function control system is fitted to the steering wheel. The SEL lastly brings 17-inch alloy wheels and provides the option of a navigation system with or without a CD changer.
