Volkswagen confirmed today that it will build a successor to the Scirocco sport coupe at its plant in Setubal, Portugal. A company spokesman said VW had made the decision early this year but had announced in the past only that it would bring a new model to Portugal without saying which one. The announcement provides little detail, but it does seem to confirm the car will be called Scirocco, rather than Corrado or anything else. Last week, rumors of the Scirocco’s imminent approval broke, along with much debate and design speculation. (Pictured right is one artist’s rendering of how the 2009 model could look).

Volkswagen is really on track these days, they are clearly making cars much better than GM could ever dream up. Even Volkswagen makes a 12 cylinder engine, that’s beyond Cadillacs ability to figure out.

Between EOS, Scirocco and Concept A, I think VW is setting up for a strong comeback …
that is if they ever bring the Scirocco and Concept A to the US

I’d purchase a Chevy any day compared to a Volkswagen. My friend has a jetta wagon and after 15k miles it is falling apart. Every time it rains the everything leaks and the interior turns into the German rendition of the Everglades. Another friend has a beetle with 10k and the interior is peeling off. I’ve got an S-10 Xtreme with 120k miles and the only thing wrong was some front bushings and an oil cooler line that came undone …

i had 4 vws, 3 where over 100k and 2 of those where over 165k and they all ran like a tank! the best driving one had 183k on it. my dad has a 99.5 jetta tdi. it has been pretty much flawless since he has owned it. and he gets 47mpg…hard to beat that combo. it doesnt matter what kind of car you own, if you dont take care of it its going to fall apart…
Dakar M3- tell you jetta friend to check the weather stripping. it more then likly ripped or dried out somewhere…nothing some silicon cant fix. the beetle could have been exposed to high heat, or maybe a cleaning adjent that didnt play well with dash.
“after 15k miles it is falling apart”
-sounds more like neglect

How does GM come up about a thread on the VW Scirroco? People go out of their way to rip GM. VW quality is not that good. My 06 Jetta TDI with 18K has squeaks and rattles that should not be there. This car is not abused. Look at the DSG and manual tranny issues at TDICLUB. My other VW was an 86 Golf, its quality (tight steering, good ride without being harsh) beats this car hands down. My brother had an 83 Scirroco, so I’m not complaining about cars I have not driven extensively. I hope this new Scirroco is more like the 80’s VW (at least mine and my brothers) quality. If so VW has a winner.

Overall, it looks kinda cool.

I’m also confused about how stories like these still generate “I would drink a tub of GM’s bathwater/I will eat GM’s first-born” comments. We get it. You love/hate GM. Your posts aren’t going to change each other’s opinions.
I love the idea of a new Scirocco, but I remember Volkswagen ballparking prices in the $30K-$40K range. Like most of their current products, this is beyond the reach of many of the buyers who like the idea of owning a VW. Give us a decontented 2.0T AWD model and sell it for $25K, VW, and you’ll be onto something.

I too am worried about the price tag. no doubt it will be a wonderful car if it has any characteristics reminiscent of the original, but even a great car has to have a good price before it makes any sense as a purcahse. However after having read this

I feel much better about VW’s future in both vehicles and pricing

While it all sounds well and good, I fear that the car is going to turn out nothing more than a Golf Coupe – similar to what Audi did with their TT.

hate to break it to you PJ, but VDub also wants to bring back the Phaeton for 2009. Looks like the move upmarket, however bad a move it will prove, will happen. I just don’t get it though, why don’t they leave the premium cars to their premium brand Audi?

Nostalgia is nice, but usually much more forgiving than reality ever was. Let’s hope the new car is nothing like the original. I purchased a 1983 Wolfsburg Edition Scirocco and it was nothing but trouble. If Sciroccos were so great, why didn’t VW continue to market them?
