Earlier this year, spy photographers spotted the upcoming Volkswagen four-door Passat Coupe — now simply called the Volkswagen Coupe — testing in the southwest U.S., but it appears as though the prototype is now undergoing a round of cold weather testing. Comparisons to the Mercedes-Benz CLS also seem to be confirmed, as the Coupe was joined by a CLS on its latest test run.
Since it was last spotted, the VW Coupe has shed most of its camouflage. The front end is typical VW and looks to take some styling cues from the Phaeton. The Coupe’s overall size looks to be about the same as the CLS and its rear almost has the appearance of a fastback.
Recent rumors have suggest the car will arrive at the Detroit auto show in January and with this prototype looking production ready, those rumors look to be true. Slated to cost around 30,000 euros, the high-end Volkswagen will steer clear of Audi’s 44,000 euro A5.
Engine output is expected to start at 160 horsepower via a 1.8 liter TSI. A 2.0 liter turbo diesel will also be offered, with 140 horsepower and a slightly higher price tag. Lastly, a range-topping FSI V6 with 300 horsepower, all-wheel-drive and a dual-clutch transmission will come in at 40,000 euros.
Special order features will include a glass roof, reverse camera, and proximity sensors for parking.

One word: Beautiful.
The roofline looks stretched, but I love the aggressive look of the windows, being set at an angle. I think it needs larger wheels though, they look good, but for some reason I would favor them being a little larger.
My only wish would be that the rear end be placed a little higher.

It seems like people wait Mercedes Benz to create a niche and see if it succeeds. Then will they built a car that either competes with it or a smaller, less expensive version of it. This car will probably look good and it will succeed, too. I’m just waiting for manufacturers to have the balls to try something new as well.

I think it looks good so far. But I wonder if it is going to be positioned as a “Passat coupe” or is it going to cost more and be positioned above the Passat? It looks a bit longer than a standard Passat, but that could be the roof/trunk lines playing visual tricks.

A smarter move would be to replace the current dowdy Passat with this sedan (it’s not a coupe). This sexy thing will kill sales of current Passat if asked to compete with it in the marketplace. If they just price it higher to make them different, we could have another Phaeton on our hnads, and it still will make the regular Passat look old-school by comparison.

That fat B-pillar ruins the whole look of the car to me, as does the Eos-like thick swath slicing through the bodyside. I can imagine this will sell to M-B intenders without the cash, but I doubt it will hurt the regular Passat because the interior volume looks much smaller.

It is a beautiful “sedan”, but then again whatever they call it people will buy it. VW really needs to pull the current Passat, if they are going to introduce this one. Having another variation of a vehicle at a higher price than the current one only pushes people into either producing the cash to go a more prestigious brand or shop for something comparable in the same/lower price range.

For those of you who seem to be having problems with the “four door coupe” concept, I think Mercedes started calling the CLS by that name because, despite having four doors, the roofline is much more like that of a 2-door coupe. Thus, the four-door coupe. I think the intent was to try to describe a new shape, or look, and NOT to try to convince us yokels that it’s something it clearly is not.
There. Does that make you feel any better?

Well, one way to make a 4-door sedan a coupe would be to give it very coupe-like proportions and a sporty stance, which is what Mercedes did with the CLS.
It seems the other way to make a 4-door sedan a coupe, according to VW, is to simply name it Coupe!

Racer, coupe used to designate a sporty 2 door car (usually with quite large and heavy doors to let victims into rear quarters). I assume it is a cause of confusion since Krauts started to call 4 door sedans “coupe”. 4 door sedan without b-pillar use to be called hardtop. The nastiness in the picture is a definite 4 door sedan with clearly visible B-pillar between rear and front door.

They can call it whatever they want, but like any other ‘big’ VW they’ll just price it out of it’s league and no one will buy the damn thing anyways. If this is their latest effort to take over the world the rest of us can still sleep soundly.

It looks nice enough, but is that enough? If it hovers above the Passat in pricing while offering no gains in utility, power, or reliability, then I can’t imagine it succeeding. I don’t think people (at least in the U.S.) flock to VW to purchase a halo image type vehicle such as this; they will continue to go to Mercedes and the CLS. At best, I think it might attract a small following of people who fancy themselves as independent thinkers who abhor following the herd to the traditional luxury mainstays in the market.
Although this car is not as dowdy as the illfated Phaeton, I think it will still meet the same fate in the U.S. People simply do not equate VW with upscale, image conscious luxury.

The rear looks very, very weird to me, but I think it’s mostly because of camouflage. Other than that, it looks good.
mazdaman- If it hovers over the Passat with similar pricing, “utility”, features and reliability, it will do good. It will attract more customers and better compete with rivals.
Also, this isn’t close to the same as the Phaeton; the major reason why the Phaeton didn’t do well was because it wasn’t as good as it’s competitors, and it didn’t have anything from Volkswagen to associate with as high end luxury.
If they get the pricing right, it will do fine.
To others- I also thought it looked a little bit like a Lexus.

From the side profile it looks really good, until you begin to look at the other pictures. I’ve always felt that the downward slope and bias of the front end design of newer VW’s makes them have a “weak” presence rather than a “sporty” one. This culminates to the extra mass overwhelming the front of the car when seen from other angles.
