Never understand why in North America we never have those good looking models available, whether it's European or Japanese. What are the marketing people thinking!!!

OOH! I know this is old but I never commented so I LIKE!!! But it's a VW, which = bad reliability, so a 36 mo. lease sounds good for me!

I worked for various VW dealers in the past 8 years. All I can say is FINALLY!!! I can't tell you how many of our customers came back from Europe and said, "There's Polos all over the place over there, how come you don't have any." Time to put the MkIV "City" Golf and Jetta out to pasture - they sucked huge (and that's why I left VW). BTW, being made in Mexico is not such a bad thing since it is meant for the North American market, but if they imported one of their local market cars here, VW would be sorry.

This will almost have to be built in Mexico to keep the price down, if they build it in Europe or the US the labor costs will make it cost too much. I don't see a problem with it being built in Mexico, if it turns out to be poorly built it will most likely be because of the design, not because of where it's built.

I wanted a Mazda 3 hatch before. Now I'll take this as my car for when I'm out of college. In 2 years all kinks will be worked out anyways. Woot for me!

Zcarsales,
i find kinda funny when we go in a car dealer trying to negotiate, and the salespeople get pissed off when we don't like their first offer. I've also noticed that this happens the most at chrysler and ford dealers. The only places where we meet "actual" nice salesmen are at lexus, audi, and mercedes. everyone else had that fake nice appearance that is so frikin noticeable that its uncomfortable for us. I can't imagine how you go about your business, but maybe you are one of those good guys

The way I see it, VW started out with their smaller offerings. They're in an odd pickle. At the moment, they have some very large and inneficient vehicles that they've never sold a lot of. For the past ten years they haven't had anything really interesting that was small, aside from when the New Beetle came out and that's old, old news. Even the Beetle gets shitty mileage with only 150 horsepower. The Golf gets shitty mileage despite being a three door and with only 170 horsepower.

@A4

Out of sheer curiousity, what do you expect out a salesman? Hell, can anyone answer this question. The economy is at a standstill right now, and do everything I can to be knowledgable about the product I sell. I'm polite, I look out for the customer's needs, and I work hard to mate the customer's needs in a car to whatever particular car fits their life.

What is it? I'm desperate to know.

One of the challenges of selling a European car is that the car is purchased in USD. The dollar is week compared to the Euro. This makes for a hideously small mark up. If its money, there isn't enough room on the dang things.

Why would you want a 1,8T when the modern 1,4TSI has the same torque and performance with much better MPG.

This car looks good. Good job VW.

Overall, the exterior design is clean, conservative, and attractive. However, I agree with cire_1wb that the squarish taillamps don't quite fit. They make the car look a bit cheaper from the back than from the front. They also do not seem to have anything in common with other current VW taillamp designs.

Although the interior looks upscale, clean, and driver-oriented, it is still somewhat uninspired. I think VW could have pushed a bit more on this model as well as on the new Golf/Rabbit. The new Polo dash seems like a tastefully rehashed Golf Mk3 dash.

zoom. i highly doubt VW is dumb enough to price this against a mini when they have the GTI to do that. plus this is smaller than the GTI/Rabbit to be pitted against other sub compacts (aveo/yaris) i could see it out pricing the yaris by a slim margin, but not much.

Not an exciting or distinctive design.. the rear end reminds me of the Gen 3 Golf, but not much else looks VW to me. The problem is that VW does fancy itself a premium brand.. which means they'll probably price the Polo against the Mini Cooper in the US market.. which will force the Rabbit/Golf and Jetta upward, right into the upcoming supposedly lower priced Passat replacement. At this rate, pretty soon VW will have four different sizes of vehicles, all within $5K of each other!

I am not really felling it at all. Its way to plain. The front is alright, but still plain when I got around to the rear end it just looks way to plain. Nothing special.

Looks good. Like a mini GTi. It's about time we got the Polo in North America. I can't remember if it's the Polo or the Lupo that replaced the Fox (it's still called that in some regions).

apart from the fact that size is overblown for a compact car (but thats what all of todays compacts are), this thing looks good (at least in the marketing trim with big wheels and shiny paintjob)
still, gonna be a hotseller, even if its just for the nameplate and the looks (cant judge anymore than that from now...)

Everybody wishes from "right" prices from VW, but they forget VW thinks it's a "premium" manufacturer now, so prices will definitely not be in the bottom half of the class...

It will be good to see some quality small cars. Aveo and Yaris and all that sub $15k lot are trash.

Very good looking car. In my opinion that what Golf should look like, not like a pregnant Rabbit. Interior to die for. Why nobody else can comprehend form follows function axiom as well as VW?

Instantly one of my favorite sub-compact designs. This is right up there with the MkIV Golf. Well done!

Really hoping for a Polo in the US soon. I really wonder why they haven't brought it here years ago, say when the Mk.V Rabbit launched. Assuming build quality will be solid (ie...not Mexican built) it should do well if priced right.... and interior improved (vs the Golf/Jetta interiors).

I am not quite so sure about the squarish taillights. Other than this, it is a conservatively handsome design for a subcompact product. At least VW didn't add a garish front end design in a lame attempt to add visual "interest" (like so many of the Japanese auto makers these days). I hope this product eats into Yaris and Fit sales, like some of you have previously mentioned.

Although I think this car is an admirable effort, I do prefer the styling of the new Fiesta. If I was in the market for this size of vehicle, I think I would go with a Fiesta 5-door.

Checked it out. This is really nice. Yeah - I think it looks like a Golf and in a good way. Like Jake said, priced right this could beat the Yaris and Fit handily and do a lot to increase VeeDubs numbers like they need here.

Anyone else thought they put pictures up of a Gen IV Golf?

If prices on this are low, as in low to mid teens, Toyota should be contemplating its own exit plan out of the US market, at least on the Yaris line.

This could be HUGE.
