Volkswagen Scirocco R [Illustrated]

07/01/2008, 3:53 PM

By Drew Johnson

Volkswagen officially launched its all-new Scirocco just a few months ago at the Geneva Motor Show, and it looks as though a hotter ‘R’ version of the hatch is on the way. A teaser image of the Scirocco R surfaced on the web just yesterday but our artists have already created a rendering of what the hot-rod Scirocco will look like.

Although not radically different than the standard Scirocco, the R version is expected to use large air intakes up front and have a slightly lower stance. A more aggressive wheel and tire package is almost a given.

It remains to be seen what powerplant VW will put under the hood of the Scirocco R, but the most likely candidate is the 250 horsepower 3.2L V6 used in the Golf R32. The Scirocco R will also likely use the R32’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

The VR6 in the R32 is a great engine, but there’s not a ton you can do to it to really bump the HP. How about the turbo 5-cylinder like they are talking about for the TT-RS so that we can get it in the neighborhood of 400hp like the BMW 135/335 engine!

That’s a bad ass ride, and the VR6 is a brilliant piece of engineering.

As a former VR6 owner, I’d agree that the VR6 was a great engine. My only engine issue was a water pump that needed to be changed under warranty (integrated into the crankcase).

Compared to today’s engines, the power isn’t quite up to par for the displacement but it remains as smooth as ever.

Although I liked my VW, I didn’t buy another because of the horrible and indifferent service.

Nice body kit!
I’m sure they offer it as an optional extra for all the models so all the dieselmaniacs can get the 1.9TDI with this body kit. Posers will love it!
As for the VR6, I think it’s useless now, VW has smaller turbo engines that can pump out 250 and weigh less.

I would think it would get the S3 four banger.

I believe WV is not bringing Scirocco stateside and with V6 it will be no go in Europe: prices of gasoline above $10/gallon and will be around $15/gallon by the time that turkey hit the street.

The difference I think between a golf and scirocco is the look, the form factor and feel on the road etc… just because it uses the R32 engine doesnt make it the same car…
