Volkswagen has unveiled images and details of the high performance version of its Scirocco hatchback ahead of its Nürburgring 24 Hour debut. The most powerful and fastest Scirocco ever, the R features a heavily revised turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, 260-horsepower engine in addition to a sportier look.
The 2.0-liter four also puts out 258 lb-ft. of torque, 51 more than the current top-end motor. The engine receives a reinforced block with a new alloy head, upgraded pistons and high-pressure injectors, as well as an uprated turbocharger and a new intercooler. It’s mated to either a six-speed manual or VW’s six-speed DSG automatic.
Like the new Golf GTI, the Scirocco R gets VW’s XDS electronic cross-axle traction control system.
Outside, a new front bumper with LED running lamps and standard Xenon headlamps set it apart from a standard Scirocco. New standard 18-inch alloy wheels can be swapped out for optional 19-inchers.
Inside, the Scirocco R gains sports seats, gloss black finish and a three-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel.

It wouldn’t be priced in most people’s reach here. This is one of those cars everyone will say they will buy, but when in comes down to it, you’ll end up elsewhere if you want something for $40,000. I hate to agree with VW, but the market for this isn’t worth the investment in shipping it here, especially considering the GTI-R will be coming here anyway. I’ll just drive my GTI and be happy I have 70% of this car in it.

Jake; Does it cost more to ship Scirroco then GTI? VW said the only reason its not coming is it will only steal GTI sales. The problem is they would have to make in Mex to make money on it here. This is twice as cool as soap bar GTI.
Too bad about the cheapo brake based diff.

I think this car, the Scirroco R, should be a replacement for the R32. For the States they should keep the Golf, GTI, and then have this as the line topper instead of the R32/GTI-R. If this came to the states it wouldn’t cost more than $35k. People are willing to pay that for R32, Evo, and STi. Certainly would pay that for this.

This car should have been a fastback, NOT a hatchback. That way, it could be sold here in the U.S. (and be more like the original)

They need to sell this thing here, import it or manufacture it here I don’t care, this is the only VW I would ever consider buying. This is the first interior shot I’ve seen too and it looks amazing, I think it’s reminiscent of an R8…

@shaver- it’s not shipping cost, but getting it to meet US regulations and having to market it seperate than the GTI would make it cost more. The fact that it’s a hatchback and not a coupe also hurts it’s US appeal. If they really wanted a US car they would have made it into more of a Jetta Coupe and not a sportier GTI. Oh, and on the topic of the GTI – It may well look like a soap bar, but it’s got the interior room of a Passat.

What the Scirocco should’ve been when it debuted. Great styling ques, and most definately packs quite some punch to compliment it’s looks. Well done VW.

Do this up in Audi trim, then there’s a reason for the price premium. Replace the A3 or something I guess.
Point is get it here.

Its already done up in Audi trim, its called the S3, it has 265hp from the 2.0T and Quattro. And theres a 3-door which we will probably never see either. VW continues to screw us.

I don’t understand. Are you going to tell me they couldn’t move more of something like this than that atrocity known as the Routan? Seriously, shake the schnitzel out of your ears and listen to car enthusiasts for a change of pace. Jenny the cougar mom needs to stay in her lair and compare fabric softeners.

looks like somebody sat on a gti…i’m weird, i guess, i like the current gti shape, and i’m not a huge fan of the revised look coming out later this year…not a real fan of this car either…maybe i’m getting old, but i like that you can get a gti in a 5-door, too…spending more money, but getting less utility is a no-no, unless it’s a 2nd or 3rd car and you’ve got other options…

The only disadvantage of the car is that you can’t deactivate the Stability Control System. With this thing on, the rear wheels are not alowed to lose much grip and offer as much oversteering as you’d like. It has lot better grip than Golf Gti and it’s lot easier to handle at the limit, but the damn electronics prevent it from being genius…
I hope that this sportier edition gives more freedom to the driver.

Yea i gotta say, the US is not the greatest of markets to do the German thing. Although compared to europe/mid east/africa your 2nd hand market overall is bloody fantastic, even converted, it’d be a dream to buy cars at the prices you guys can. Getting behind the wheel of an awesome ride in the US of A is a lot more feasible than in the rest of the world. Ive seen rental company ads in the US just giving it away with their rates. Ferrari, Porsche, Mustang just waiting to be plucked and spun out on some transient LA overpass or a lonely back country; perhaps even slowly nudge through a sweltering and scenic Miami intersection at a snails pace. Hell yes sir! Its been a longtime dream of mine to tear up a couple big US cities in some late model Italian or German block and at the great prices US rental companies are giving it up, it might just happen.

VW is one of the few companies going in the correct direction with styling, inside and out. I mean, have you seen that convertible they’re making? =) VDub and Ford are pretty much the only companies really turning around their styling in a good way. Nissan on the other hand…(have you seen the Cube?!?)
