Volkswagen to build mid-engine roadster?

03/20/2006, 2:05 PM

By admin

Volkswagen chairman Wolfgang Bernhard is seriously considering building a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive roadster based on the Volkswagen Concept R shown in 2003. According to 4Car, the car will be part of a 20-vehicle rollout over the next five years, which will include ten vehicles in markets currently unoccupied by VW. The car is not expected until the latter half of the five-year model blitz. Volkswagen is also expected to roll out a four-door “coupe” similar to the Mercedes CLS-Class, and a Scirocco coupe. Second on the GX3. VW needs to get away from overwieght luxo barges (even the new GTI weighs in at 3,300 lbs) and make some lightwieght drivers cars.

Agreed. This would be cool, but the GX-3 would be perfect. I’d make the GX-3 my toy car AND daily driver, making the family sedan a car just for family trips.

Very nice. Go for it, though the “chrome” dash might be a bit much on a sunny day.

I agree with the first few posters, this is a nice roadster, but what I really can’t wait to see in my garage is the new GX3. Come on VW, don’t drop the ball on this one!

Its gorgeous, but hasn’t VW learned that we don’t want any expensive cars from them? Both this roadster and the 4 door “coupe” will be more expensive than a fully loaded Passat which tops out around 40K.

Make it a coupe, fix up the front a bit, and I’ll be the first in line.

With Porsche as the new (partial) owner of VW, how likely is it that they’ll let a half-price Boxster into production. Unless they make it themselves – sorta like Ford Five Hundreds based on Volvo S80’s.

GTI engine in a Boxster chassis – I’ll take it.
