VW teams with North Sails to create Touareg North Sails design study

07/21/2008, 1:30 PM

By Drew Johnson

Although Volkswagen isn’t exactly synonymous with sailing, the German automaker has teamed with North Sails – the world’s leading maker of sails – to create the Touareg North Sails design study. The Touareg concept will be unveiled at the Travemünder Woche sailing race in Germany.

Based on the current Touareg SUV, the North Sails treatment gives the SUV plenty of nautical styling cues. The exterior of the Touareg has been spruced up with 19 inch wheels, new fog lights and special blue reflectors.

On the inside, the nautical theme continues with teak wood flooring, LED lighting and white Nappa leather seats finished with aquamarine stitching. A set of binoculars, compass and plenty of North Sails badging rounds out the package.

And just in case the path becomes a little too narrow for the Touareg, a North Sails bicycle is stowed aboard.

Teak wood flooring? That’ll hold up about as well as the VW electrical system. Jeez.

Are you kidding? Those Teak floors have to be one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. The little blue rope lights, not so much.

Way to make a heavy, bloated VW even heavier and more bloated.

Well, at least they are thinking outside of the box. I like the styling myself, although it does appear quite “preppy”. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of Ivy League College boys getting out of these things with their sweaters over their shoulders. My only put off is the green tint on the windows. But I, too, like the wood floors.

beatusmongous, I imagine preppy boys are not VW segment, I believe it is more of Porsche crowd.

Hey… I’ve got an idea… why not make it look exactly like the Cayenne? They’re the same thing after all.

adding ground effects definitely improved the proportions of the vehicle by raising the beltline. Looks less top heavy now. not so sure about the stripes. i’d use the binoculars quite often, though. particularly driving by the beach.
