Next Volkswagen Jetta GLI comes into focus

GTI power and suspension tweaks are on the menu.

Details are beginning to emerge about the next-generation Volkswagen Jetta GLI.

The hot-rodded sedan will be based on the brand-new 2019 Jetta (pictured) introduced earlier this year at the Detroit auto show. It sounds like it won't disappoint in the performance department. Autoblog reports the GLI will receive the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found under the hood of the GTI.

The engine makes 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque in the GTI; there's no word yet on whether those figures will carry over to the GLI. Front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission will come standard, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic will be offered at an extra cost.

Volkswagen will make tweaks to the suspension. Engineers will toss out the standard Jetta's torsion beam rear axle suspension and install a multi-link independent rear suspension similar to the Golf's. Expect to find modifications to the steering and braking systems, too. In short, it sounds like the GLI will turn into the proper three-box GTI its name alludes to.

Autoblog learned the GLI will make its debut in the next year. That means we could see it in the metal for the first time this fall at the Los Angeles auto show. Sales will likely begin in time for the 2020 model year.
