Volkswagen ID R begins testing on Pikes Peak [Video]

Driver Romain Dumas is attempting to beat Rhys Millen\'s EV record of 8:57.

Volkswagen has released a video highlight of its ID R first rollout on Pikes Peak.

Piloted by multiple Pikes Peak Hill Climb winner Romain Dumas, VW's first all-electric race car will be taking aim at Rhys Millen's EV record of 8:57.118.

"Before we actually assembled the ID R Pikes Peak, we used computers to analyse a multitude of different configurations," says technical advisor Willy Rampf. "It was clear to us that we would not have time to build multiple test vehicles. We had to get it right at the first attempt."

The car weighs less than 2,425 pounds, including the driver, offering a weight advantage compared to other Pikes Peak electric racers.

The team has only a few more weeks to prepare before the event takes place on June 24.
