Volkswagen considers Arteon shooting brake

Development plans are already underway but the project has not yet received a final green-light.

Volkswagen is apparently considering a shooting-brake adaptation of the Arteon sedan.

"I would like to make a shooting brake," VW product line head Dr. Elmar-Marius Licharz told Auto Express. "These plans are underway but it's not yet final."

Unconfirmed reports recently hinted at a 3.0-liter VR6 engine for the flagship sedan, providing a higher performing alternative to the current 2.5-liter mill. The larger unit could bump output to the 400-horsepower range.

"If we build a six-cylinder engine - we are discussing it for the Arteon, we have built one already in a prototype vehicle - it will be one which you can also use in the Atlas and vice versa," the executive clarified.

If approved, a high-output engine is a likely candidate for the US market. The same can't be said for the shooting brake, though the company has not explicitly named which markets will get the wagon body style.
