Volkswagen shows ID R's record-breaking Pikes Peak run [Video]

Helicopter footage shows the full run, which beat the all-time record by a full 16 seconds.

Volkswagen has posted a video of the ID R making its record-breaking run up the slopes of Pikes Peak last month.

Piloted by Romain Dumas, the all-electric race car climbed the mountain in 7:57.148 minutes. The run easily destroyed the EV record and even beat the all-time record, set in 2013 by Sébastien Loeb, by a full 16 seconds.

VW commissioned a helicopter to chase the ID R up Pikes Peak. At some points, the camera crew appears to struggle to keep up with the car.

The German automaker will use the successful run to help promote its new ID sub-brand for electric production vehicles starting in 2020.
