Volkswagen to build electric cars in America

The Buzz and the Crozz will wear a \"made in America\" tag.

American manufacturing will help Volkswagen launch its electric car offensive, according to a recent report. At least two of the company's upcoming battery-powered model will wear a "made in America" tag.

British magazine Autocar learned the production variants of the I.D. Buzz and I.D. Crozz concepts (pictured above) will be made in the United States. The decision is hardly surprising; while both are global models, insiders already expect American will be each nameplate's biggest market.

"For strong product momentum, they need to be produced in the USA. It's not possible to come into a high-volume scenario with imported cars. We want to localize electric mobility in the United States," explained Hinrich Woebcken, the head of Volkswagen's increasingly independent North American division, in an interview with Autocar.

The magazine adds the Buzz and the Crozz -- names that will not be retained for production -- will be Americanized for our market. There's no word on what that means yet; they could receive a softer suspension and a different trim level structure or the changes could go deeper.

We also don't know where Volkswagen will make its electric cars. Its only American factory is located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, so it's likely there that electric car production will take place.
