VW releases another ID R Pikes Peak racer

The company aims to break the record for electric racing cars.

Volkswagen has released another teaser image for its ID R race car, due to be revealed on April 22.

The company's first fully-electric race car has been purpose-built for the Pikes Peak hill climb, with "aerodynamic perfection" and lightweight construction to carve through the corners on its way up to 14,110 feet.

"Volkswagen took part with an iconic and spectacular twin-engine Golf in 1987 but came up just short of victory," the automaker says. "The goal is now to settle that score by setting a new record for electric cars."

The racer borrows a few design cues from Volkswagen's other production-focused ID concepts, with unique glowing accent lights and an illuminated logo.

The car will be among several EVs attempting this year's Race to the Clouds on June 24.
