Volkswagen’s four-door coupe to bow in Detroit?

Volkswagen’s Passat-based four-door-coupe could make its world debut at the Detroit auto show in January, a new report by Germany’s AutomobilWoche suggests. Slated to cost around 30,000 euros, the high-end Volkswagen will steer clear of Audi’s 44,000 euro A5.

Engine output is expected to start at 160 horsepower via a 1.8 liter TSI. A 2.0 liter turbo diesel will also be offered, with 140 horsepower and a slightly higher price tag. Lastly, a range-topping FSI V6 with 300 horsepower, all-wheel-drive and a dual-clutch transmission will come in at 40,000 euros.

Volkswagen will make many luxury and electronic features optional to keep the base price low. Special order features will include a glass roof, reverse camera, and proximity sensors for parking.

I know from a strict standpoint, coupe and sedan are defined based on size(volume) rather than number of doors. But for all practical purposes today, a coupe has 2 doors. If you’ve built a 4 door vehicle, suck it up and call it a sedan. You don’t see any auto manufacturers promoting 2 door sedans, although strictly speaking there have been many over time.

We’ll see if VW learned their lesson from the Phaeton.
I think the term ‘4-Door Coupe’ is an idiot filter: if you’re too stupid to fall for it, then you deserve whatever you get.

Mercedes-Benz is the first one to actively promote a 4 door car as a “coupe”, global lightning. And today, VW makes excellent cars, that wasn’t true 5 years ago, but it is now.

VW’s have improved greatly in their quality but they’re still not up to par. That’s kind of a moot point though as this vehicle would be placed well below the level of that Phaeton dud. I really hope this stupid 4 door coupe BS doesn’t make its way out of Germany.

global_lightning, your posts has been more than idiotic lately. The CLS was a success that’s now being copied by everybody else. They’re making $ off this new trend and a lot of rich smart buyers like lawyers + docs dig it. Well that is except for Renton cause he’s an immature intern at some clinic who’s still dreaming about owning a Bimmer like he was 20 years ago.

A four door coupe is just a sedan with poor rear headroom. It’s a sportier look, makes one feel like they are driving something special (niche-esque) and was a term drummed up by the super smart people in marketing.

As for VW quality; I still believe they are way down on the JD Power Survey slightly ahead of Land Rover.

JD Power’s credibility aside, I can speak from first hand experience that Volkswagen builds junk. I leased a brand new 2003 GTI. The car self-destructed after six months of ownership. Electrical problems, engine problems, transmission problems and countless pieces of cheap, brittle plastic that snapped off in my hands. The sales people I dealt with were idiots and the service departments were inept. As far as I’m concerned, I’ll never drive another VW again, coupe or not.

global_lightning, I was referring to the concept of 4 door coupe, I can care less about the Phaeton though it makes a good cheap used car.

The guys at VW tried very hard to gain my trust on the brand, they even gave me a 3 day long test drive of the new TT before it was available in the US. Just to make me buy their damn Caravelles…

Well, I have an ‘02 Golf TDI as my daily driver, my girlfriend has an ‘01 Beetle TDI, a friend of mine has a 2006 Jetta 2.5, another friend of mine has an ‘01 GTI 1.8T and none of us have had any problems with our cars since we’ve gotten them!

I think VW quality is great!
