Volkswagen North America CEO Jonathan Browning has confirmed that the high-performance Beetle R Concept is headed for production.
“Today it’s still a concept, but I talk about it in those terms with a twinkle in my eye,” Browning said, adding that the concept car will provide “a glimpse of what a production version will look like.”
Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the Beetle R Concept will help lend substance to VW’s claim that the latest Beetle is more enthusiast-oriented than its predecessor when it makes its way to showrooms. Sharing a powertrain with the company’s Golf R and Scirocco R, the concept car features a 256-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine sending power to all four wheels.
Sitting on 20-inch “Talladega” alloy wheels wrapped around R-design blue brake calipers, the concept has a front fascia with a unique design about 1.2 inches wider than the standard Beetle, while flared fenders and a unique rear diffuser complete the look. Inside, the hopped-up bug gets its own Nappa leather-covered sports seats and high gloss black trim.
While minor styling details and trim pieces could change in the transition from concept to production, except the important elements, including the high-output four and all-wheel-drive system, to remain unchanged. Check back later for updates concerning when the Beetle R will hit the market.
