Chevrolet says that, in response to strong initial demand, it is increasing the annual production capacity of its Chevrolet Volt extended-range EV by 50 percent to 45,000 units by 2012.

The automaker says that it received significant public interest after announcing that Volt would retail from $41,000 and be available at an aggressive $350 per month for a 36-month lease.

According to Chevrolet, it has 25,000 people on the “Volt enthusiasts list,” although the automaker did not clarify exactly what terms the list entails.

Production of the Chevrolet Volt will begin later this year at General Motors’ Hamtramck, Michigan, assembly plant.
