Harnessing the talents of world recording-holding high liner Faith Dickey, Volvo sets up a stunt that seems to go completely against the grain of the safety conscious image the company has spent years and countless dollars cultivating. Although Dickey is attached to the tightrope by a safety harness, plenty could still have gone wrong in this stunt as you can see for yourself in the video clip below.
Hollywood stunt Director Peter Pedrero (James Bond, Pirates of the Caribbean) sets up a tightrope between two Volvo FH series trucks on an unopened highway in Croatia. The two trucks hurtle along the highway on either side of a bridge while headed for a tunnel at speed. While Dickey has traversed ravines and other challenges on a tightrope between two non-fixed points, this stunt was a first.
"I've never slacklined moving forwards before," she confesses before the stunt.
For the truck drivers, the stunt was no mean feat either. One of the drivers, Mark Jones explains just two of the ways in which the stunt could go wrong. "Too far apart, the rope breaks, too near together, she falls off," he says.
Happily, Dickey gets away with the stunt, jumping onto the second moving truck just before an approaching tunnel cuts the rope in two. It's a slick ad, with just the right amount of tension; but one questions the lengths to which Volvo have gone on this occasion to help cast off its staid image.
