So, we’ve established that your math skills are weak. Twice as much? Even with every option installed you can’t get a C30 over $33k, and the cheapest 09 Mazda 3 is $22k.

Our independent Volvo mechanic is absolutely adamant about avoiding any post-2000 Volvo. Every one of them. Parts that used to be made of steel were replaced by pieces of plastic. Failure rates for components like a/c compressors, alternators, motor mounts, etc. zoomed off the charts. Beneath the skin, he maintains, an ’05 Volvo was no better built than an ’05 Taurus. Safe, sober, comfortable, yes: reliable, no.

I love when folks say a car is reliable as long as you keep replacing expensive parts.

That’s the only way to have a Volvo, leasing. Once the lease it’s up, adios.
I would definitely not recommend keep the car without warranty.

When I traded my wife’s xc70 and saw it going away into the dealer’s parking lot, I had such a liberate feeling of getting rid for good of that junk.

Volvo’s are comfortable and safe, but that’s about it. Reliable, no way. Unless you feel dropping thousands of dollars in repair a reliable thing. Most Volvo’s since 1994 are junk. Before that, I agreed they are tanks and hang in there.

I don’t know if it is just in vogue to bash Volvo these days on LLN but I drive everything and keep coming back to Volvo. My 07 XC90 has been completely trouble free since new and the 01 V70 XC I just traded with 140K was always reliable and relatively inexpensive to maintain (not to mention the leather and paint still looked new). And my new S80 T6 – what a car! Have any of you nerds ever actually driven one? A friend of mine with a 1998 M3 was blown away when I completely smoked him at a light the other night. I’ll be interested to see LLN’s review today of the XC60. The S80 platform and powerplant in a sub-$40K SUV – that will likely be my next car.

And jonmiles, I think the word is “excels” (in safety) and yes they do. Most people who can spell realize that.

i used to sell volkswagens and used volvo’s…. in my experience, volvo is a true european car for a specific (mature) customer, one that prioritizes comfort, safety, assembly quality (fit and finish), reliability and for the most part function over form….. that is exactly what volvo’s (yes, the ford division’s) products cater to. their cars are built and hold up very well, but I’m not going to deny that parts are expensive (because that is the cost of quality) and so is labor (this is considered a premium or luxury brand), but its not very often you would have to be concerned about it…

and by the way, is such a tool…

When my nieghbors S80 lease expired 2 months ago they went and got ….. a Chrysler 300C (totally optioned out). I asked why and they said the Volvo had way way too many problems. I know that sounds like a joke to buy a Chrysler to reduce problems, but everyone I know with a 300C or Dodge Charger R/T is loving it and pretty much has no issues.

Alfasud, almost every new model of any vehicle will get deposits and preorders. The C30 when it first came out immediately sold 2 vehicles near me that I saw. Since then not one new C30 has been seen on the roads in my area. The gotta-haves got theirs and the smart shoppers bought real cars.

I think this vehicle is going to mark the demize of Volvo; they spent a ton of time and money on this vehicle, and it’s still not competitive with the Audi Q5.

My wife has driven only Volvos (currently has new S80) because they are comfortable, safe, and not too high tech (she would never understand iDrive). That being said, we do 3-year leases because that is certainly when they start to fall apart. Every one of them, without fail…

Tell Mr, Volvo salesman that there are already 10 thousand orders for the new Camaro. 36 is nothing pal. Those same people will be the first back to the dealership for a major repair too

Meanwhile folks will be driving their Equinox’s for hundreds of thousands of miles and will never experience a problem. That’s the difference between GM and a rebadged Ford

Price is ridiculous and Volvo no longer stands for quality. You still see some 30+ year-old Volvos lumbering around because they are unkillable. You do not see many 15-year-old Volvos around because they all died. My Volvo ownership experience mirrors gugy’s. You’d be insane to option this dinky little thing up to $45k. For that money you can have a nice Q7.

Borat, in those days I could stagger out of the bar on a bad night and compete with a 6 cyl Volare, Fairmont or Malibu without ever getting into a car. Fortunately that was about the time Galaga came out and I found a new hobby.

That is a nice story about donating the car to a family. I’ll be donating a car to my soon to be 16 year old daughter next month. If that car makes it two years I’ll buy her a college.

Don’t blame Volvo for what Ford have done to them. I had 2 Volvos in my life and they were great cars. The first one was used (make it very, very used) 1967 122S. I restored it with my father and drove almost 2 years and donated to needy family after finishing college. It was not a race car, but in late 70′s it was great since there were no muscle cars on the road and it could compete with 6 cyl Volare, Fairmont and Malibu fine and outhandle them with ease. 945 Turbo was a blast and in 3.5 years of lease only battery died. Otherwise I haven’t seen a dealer. After that came Ford………

I have a S70 that is a piece of cr ap. I just kept this car because right now I don’t want to buy a new one.
My wife had a AWD XC70, another piece of cr ap. After these two experiences, I decided never to buy a Volvo again.
They are comfortable and safe. But that’s about it. The mechanic of these cars is a total disaster and it’s so damn expensive to fix and pay for parts.
I would definitely not recommend it after the warranty expires. For me Volvo can die, I will not miss it.

Alfasud, what state are you in? Volvo makes great cars, esp in the safety department, I have a Gf who is alil mad with the costs fo the repairs on here 4 year old S60, however she still loves the car. I personally havent found anything to love about them, even the S40 with the allwheel drive and T5, wasnt too fun to drive, esp compared to its platform mate the Mazdaspeed3…. I was dumb and bought a used car instead…………. The S60 prototype at the auto show was pretty sexy though (or was that cause i was staring at a few of the swdish beauties they import fo the show?

I find it hilarious you even try to compare the quality of an Equinox, to any Volvo product. And did you know that not every car is specifically built for the American consumer? Maybe this Volvo was built for people with some class and good taste, not someone like yourself.

How much less is the new Equinox gonna be compared to this? The ‘nox will be faster, quieter, better styled, much better quality, infinitely more reliable and desireable. Sorry Volvo, you failed. Americans don’t buy foriegn garbage anymore, they’d rather drive a GM vehicle now.
