I don’t see this car going against their roots. It fits pretty well in their lineup and doesn’t compromise anything “volvo”.

Who gives a crap about going against their roots. If it makes them a stronger company with a real chance of surviving the harsh competition then I’d say go for it. Heck it’s a business…

god damnit, as volvo goes more and more main stream, they dilute their brand image. Even though they have the ability to sell more cars, they will become the chrysler of european luxury brands; in that they will only sells cars when they are hot and have buzz about them.

For example, mercedes sells cars hype or no hype, and volvo, in the 80’s and early 90’s used to sell more cars than mercedes and BMW combined.

So, even though ford making money with volvo, they are diluting what they paid for.

Big Boy Combo, you’re correct about the Mazda3 and the C30. However, the S40, the new Land Rover LR2 and the new Volvo crossover (maybe called XC50) are all C1 vehicles that are sold or will be sold in the US.
