2010 Volvo C70 [Live image update]

09/15/2009, 10:15 AM

By Drew Johnson

Volvo officially introduced its revised C70 convertible earlier today at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Though almost identical to the outgoing model mechanically, the revised C70 features a new, more dramatic look outside and some revisions to the interior.

Heavily influenced by the S60 Concept that made its debut at last January’s Detroit Auto Show up front, the C70 confirms the new styling direction for the Ford-owned Swedish automaker. Compared to the current car, the 2010’s headlights are larger and more swept back, giving the car a slightly more aggressive look. The front fascia also has bolder character lines with the signature Volvo grille now looking more predominate.

Out back the 2010 C70 sports new taillights and dual exhaust.

Inside, Volvo says the dashboard has been thoroughly redesigned, though we’re having a hard time spotting the differences. New materials are designed to give a more upmarket feel and the seats gain a softer leather.

Powertrains will again include a pair of diesel and a pair of gasoline engines in its home market, though only the top-end turbocharged gas engine will come to North America. The base 2.4i gas engine puts out 168 horsepower, while the turbocharged T5 model, which will be puts out 227 ponies.

This is a tight and tough looking ride. It’s not aggressive, but still knows how to assert itself. I like how the front is more wrapped around with its drawn back headlamps that elongate the nose. The tall body side emphasizes a more desirable small DLO opening which I think really fits in with this type of car. you can see what I mean on the sketches at http://bit.ly/obLwT

Why Volvo refuses to up the power in this thing is a real head-scratcher. It’s had the same engine and horsepower rating for 12 years now. It’s the prettiest Volvo ever, but they should at least be putting in the now-dead S60R’s powertrain. 300hp is not that high these days and I would think volvo could retain its image and still sport that kind of power.

I’ve always liked this car due to the fact that you can get a used one 2-3 years old for less than 30K. It’s the best auto hardtop convertible deal out there.

Good looking, but it needs the 2.9L inline-6 turbo from the S80 & the 4.4L Yamaha V8 from the XC90. Volvo’s inline-5 are getting old, especially in their top of the line models.

Not the 210 C70. Volvo has not designated this as the 2011 C70. Feels like bate and switch to those who bought a 2010 C70 thinking they would get new upgrades. What a slap in the face!

I am just glad to see that Volvo is getting away from the old/dated taillight design, you know with the stupid nub on the top inside, if that makes since.
