The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has just released its most recent side-impact crash-test scores for large sedans. Of the 6 models tested, 3 earned a top score of Good, the Volvo S80, Kia Amanti and Acura RL. The Volvo S80 also took home the IIHS’ highest honor, Top Safety Pick, for receiving ratings of Good in two other crash tests, frontal and rear.
The lowest rated sedan in the test was the BMW 5 Series. Despite having side airbags, the BMW scored a Marginal, just one spot above the lowest ranking of Poor. The Cadillac STS and Mercedes E Class faired better than the BMW, both earning scores of Acceptable, but were hoping to achieve better scores as both models were recently redesigned to perform better in this crash test.

Crash-test ratings are good phantoms.
I’m not sure there are many crtashes in which you’re OK because of a ***** where you’d have been dead had you a ***.
It comes down to the difference between beaing dead and wishing you were.
give me a 454 so I can power my way out of danger

Anyone know the actual scores? It would be interesting to see if the redesigned 5 scored higher or lower than the old 5. Either way BMW needs to take notice & make major changes, fast. Acceptable should not be acceptable for any carmaker.

I don’t like the 5 series. This should be one of several things that tells BMW to redesign it already.

Crash testing does not mean a whole lot. I’m sure if you changed the angle of impact, all the cars would score differently.

Yeah Driver54. Go buy a Brilliance made in China and put your money where your mouth is, dude.
BTW – BMW help engineer a few things for Brilliance, I read somewhere. Now it all makes sense.

Perhaps a BMW and Mercedes are less likely to be an accident due to their superior dynamics; something a Volvo and Kia wouldn’t know about?

Any excuse to redesign a Bimmer is fine by me….
But what I don’t get is how come there are anything but “Good” ratings with production cars, especially in a mid- or full-size sedan where you’d think you’d have enough structure and space to design all the crumple zones and passive safety, etc. you’d need? I mean, it’s no secret how the IIHS tests the cars, and the manufacturers test the cars extensively before putting them into production. So the real crime here is that BMW knew that it had a sucky car in crash tests, and then charges what it does for it.
Shame on other auto makers too (especially the luxo brands), but I like picking on BMW because their cars are ugly too.

Its amazing when a KIA out does a BMW on a safety crash. Driver 54…….your comment was dumb, if they change the angle…….well duh, but if bmw cant even get this angle decent, what makes you think a different angle they would do better. Face it at this they sucked. No company can be perfect in everything. BMW’s just happens to be keeping you alive if you crash.

BMW should really redesign the 5 series anyway. I hate the way it looks in and out and it doesn’t drive that great either. The safety crash test shows BMW’s weakness as a manufacturer but I am confident that they will work on this issue for the new 5 and the rest of their cars.

Well I expected Volvo to do that well, what I didn’t expect was BMW doing so poorly, after all the technology that was packed into it. But now that I think about it, they use plastic bumpers and lightweight materials to offset weight and that might be the reason
