Swedish automaker Volvo is developing a twin-clutch gearbox to compete with offerings from Volkswagen , company officials reportedly told WhatCar? magazine. The technology will also be shared with parent company Ford , according to the report.

The transmission will be similar to the Direct Shift Gearbox from VW, which uses two computer-controlled clutches to offer extremely quick shifts. The technology is generally regarded as superior to an SMG-style automated manual with just one clutch, because shifts are much smoother during casual driving.

Twin-clutch transmissions are also comparable to regular manual transmissions in terms of fuel economy. BMW is said to be developing a dual-clutch gearbox to replace its SMG system, and Porsche is working on one to replace its Tiptronic automatic system. Chrysler is also rumored to have a DSG rival under development.
