Volvo joins E85 game

07/10/2007, 2:00 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Volvo is set to introduce a biofuel engine for its C30, S40 and V50 models. The new 1.8 liter FlexiFuel four cylinder engine puts out the same 125 horsepower as the non-biofuel version, but the E85 car qualifies for a 20 percent tax reduction in Sweden.

The FlexiFuel option will initially be available only in Sweden, where E85 has proven to be fairly popular. Volvo is playing catchup with Saab, who released powerful E85 versions of its 9-5 last year and recently unveiled E85 versions of its 9-3.

Never thought I could see myself in a Volvo. They seem like generic cars IMO, nothing special about them…. Now I might just consider one (pending on how well e85 integrates into my area)

Let’s see the new 3.0L turbo 6 in the C30/S40/V50 and make that E85 compliant

The S40 and V50 have been available with E85 engines for some time. This is no news…

E85 is nothing to applaud at this point. It may help relieve some of the foreign dependence, but for the US market, it just doesnt make sense. At first it looked like a great proposition, and it is a good alternative to hold us over for a bit, but the best fuel for transition is diesel. E85 doesnt get better mileage, nor is it readily available. Its good to have every gas engine with the option, but its not the solution.

E85 is not the answer.

It’s a nice car, drove one for some 700 kms last weekend, and it was fun.

I tend to agree that E85 is not the answer to our global challenges. That said, if I were a swede, I’d buy the C30 E85 just to get the tax reduction, which basically would be sad, cause I wouldn’t really be doing anything good for the environment, just for my private economy and my guilty conscience.
