Volvo says its goal is to develop a vehicle that simply could not get in an accident by 2020. The automaker intends to supplement the crash-detection systems that slow down its forthcoming XC60 small SUV to a complete stop when they detect a low speed wreck by introducing measures that would help Volvos avoid accidents from any speed. The automaker will preview the technology on its S60 concept car next month.
“Our aim for 2020 is that no one should be killed or injured in a Volvo car,” Thomas Broberg, a safety expert with the Swedish auto maker told the Los Angeles Times.
The upcoming S60 concept car, which will debut at next month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, will showcase some of these future features when it is unveiled. The main technologies that the automaker says will prevent its future cars from being in serious wrecks are its Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and its pedestrian detection system.
The two items’ names are pretty self-explanatory: Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake can apply the brakes’ full force automatically if the driver doesn’t do so, and the pedestrian detection system relies on cameras and radar to prevent the vehicle from impacting a stray pedestrian.
“Up until now, we have focused on helping the driver avoid collisions with other vehicles,” Broberg said. “Now we are taking a giant step forward with a system that also boosts safety for unprotected road users. New sensor technology also makes it possible to advance from 50% to full-automatic braking power.”

How about a system that jolts Volvo drivers in the *ass when they’re being moving chicanes on the freeway?

I don’t think anything from Volvo can help when there are accidents caused by ice, no matter how soon you brake at full force. It is cool to see a company trying to change thing though

How about a semi coming at you from the opposite direction in the rain and having a head on collision when you both are going 70 mph+??? Does Volvo really believe that in the next 10 years they can get NO ONE killed in a Volvo? And that claim is pretty rediculus anyway because you have to think people will still be driving older, 2010 and under, Volvo’s in 2020 because not everyone driving a Volvo will have a new one, so I guess those people don’t count?

Wouldn’t it be easier, and more profitable, to just make a vehicle that gets #$^#’n 100 mpg?! Why put billions into this when just making a vehicle that gets 100 mpg would be the world’s biggest selling vehicle, and hence would make enough money for Volvo to BUY Ford.. er.. no, wait.. well, you know what I mean. Seriously though, why hasn’t anyone made a vehicle that gets 100 damn mpg yet? And, wouldn’t you think that it would be the biggest automotive news in the last 100 years pretty much? Sorry, I know it’s totally off the topic here, but, it could pay for Volvo’s safety program for decades.

A worthy thought, but Volvo sells safety. And for many of us, we’d buy safety over gas mileage. Volvo fills that niche. Safety features are very heavy and drastically reduce gas mileage, so Volvo would probably have a harder time accomplishing a 100 mpg car than a 99.9% safe car. Hopefully Volvo will find ways of being safe and fuel efficient (I must say that driving around in a car that is safe, has great utility and gets better gas mileage than many vehicles 15 years newer is gratifying and Volvo made it happen).
To the naysayers, well, we made it to the moon in about ten years of concerted effort. What is wrong with a goal that includes perfection? Even if not achieved, it will spur development that will drastically reduce deaths and injuries. You can laugh; but, as my mother is fond of reminding me: The fool didn’t know it couldn’t be done, so he went ahead and did it anyway. Or, my father’s preferred: Nothing beats a try but a fail. At least Volvo is trying.

Lionwithoutpride your right but you know the world’s problems won’t be solved by a 100MPG car or 1000MPG. Heck Honda has the New Insight and it will be rated close to 72 MPG and Ford has the Fusion at 41 PMG City and 36 Hwy which ain’t bad. Or even If Volvo USED Concrete Slabs to build the safest car in the world. ok You that won’t solve all our problems. It won’t solve Gridlock Traffic despite the number of lane you add on. Take a look at Movies today and see the sheer stupidity and idiocy in every one of them! I say before we improve gas mileage lets ban Useless Movie Makes(most of Hollywood-Boycott most movie, then lets abolish all Lawyers, (Most of em) Most Judges,Then lets tell the rich they need to give up their trappings. LOL
But back to Future vehicles, Lets start with a fresh sheet of paper shall we. we all want the Perfect car/vehicle, So lets imagine for a moment all indsutrial companies combined with all the car companies combined their synergistic efforts together to make:the perfect car. It has the the ultimate powerplant, Tremedously Powerful motor or propulsion system, And super Efficient, meaning it can go for momths or even years before a recharge or refueling of anykind is needed, safety was taken to a new plateau where it never was before, could even drive, maintain and fuel itself to the owners request, plus it had all the latest tech tool including being able to take a stool sample while seated to see if you have colon cancer by sitting too long or whatever.
Even with all the perfect this and that .
Listen it won’t change the fact it won’t stop people from doing the same stupid things over and over again. Every day you and i live. We already have too manyvehilce clogging up roadways.
This is a problem that needs to be addressed

Points well taken. I know that “modern” vehicles are infinitely more safe than even the old monsters of the 60’s and 70’s (Olds 98, Caddy DeVilles, Buicks, etc), and all that technology probably takes away from mileage. But, I still find it hard to believe that with some of the best minds in industry, and with the billions of dollars spent on research and development, we still get vehicles in 2009 that get 20 mpg. If you would have asked me 20 years ago what the mileage on a new Ford F-150 would be, I would have said 40 mpg. But, come to think of it, when I was a kid we bought a brand new (orange!) 1969 Ford F-250 Camper Special to haul our new Winnebago truck camper on, and that thing got 8 mpg! EIGHT mpg with a crappy 360 V8! And that was without the camper on the back!. I guess we have come a long way after all.
