I think it looks good. A nice evolution of Volvo design. Volvo has a lot of potential. It’s a shame that Ford needs to get rid of this brand.

The concept is gorgeous… Very 2020…

The production car looks very good, but it´s too 2010…

The roofline of the concept was impracticable, but I think they could have saved the front and rear designs to make a car really ahead of its time.

You realize the fog lights are designed like that on purpose to meet European safety regs . . . right? That one bright rear light, combined with the two standard rear lights, forms a triangle, which is the “caution . . . warning!!!” symbol in Europe.

Two things bother me. The front end looks like it is sliding off the car. And what is with those auxiliary lights between the headlights and grille? It looks like they were just put there to eat up space in which case the front end just needed to be re-designed.

I think the front end works well on their SUV, but not so much on a sedan. For some reason, Volvos always look old within a year they are released, even with new design language. I hope they make the button for the taillight fog use setting larger so I don’t have to get stuck behind one with 1 bright light glaring at me again.

As manufacturers invest more and more into ergonomics and market studies, it becomes obvious that the best car is just an amorphous blob that has loads of interior space and makes no impression (good or bad) on the customer! Hence the fact that all small cars tend too look like the Civic and most medium sized tend to look like the Passat as these are the volume sellers in their categories and considered as “industry standards”.
I’m sick of good looking cars that I hate, I want more bad looking cars that I can love!

I’m saddened to see the distinctive “shoulder” line of current Volvos disappear with this new S60.. had they retained the notched bodyside running beneath the greenhouse from headlights to trunk, the taillights wouldn’t look so Civic-generic.

The only thing we need to find out now is what engine options will be available. I’m sure the interior design will not be disappointing. The real couriosity will be the next generation XC90.

Not only did I research the car, I was at the dealer and it had 5 miles on it. It’s new. I can tell you where I work the Volvo’s are purchased for the Northeast region of the US just because we can cycle them in and out cheaply since they sell them to us for next to nothing, and yes, we do Infiniti G37’s as well, but not Audi or Jaguar. The price premium of the Volvo brand is a joke. How is rebranding a Focus/Mazda3 make them any better than Cadillac for having the Cimirron? No, the S40/C30/V50/C70 aren’t bad cars, but premium they aren’t either. How can you build a premium brand who produces nothing more than Focus-based products as their volume model?

I don’t really get where you are going with your statements, are you saying Volvo needs to lower their sticker, not give any rebates, make their cars better or all of what I just said?

JakeK66, It turns out that you read things and not research the reasons. The car that you saw was probably a demo…but I guess you are too smart and ignorant to know what the story behind that car is. As far as volume scum is concern….MY FEELINGS STILL STAND!!! I have worked in the industry for too long and I know what I am talking about. Volvo is not isolated selling to rental fleets. Jaguar, Audi, and Infiniti does the same thing. The allowance and give away programs to people who generally do not buy luxury cars brings down the brand. Volvo also is taking away the value of their vehicles by giving money to customers, it’s their way of saying, ” we are sorry Mr. Customer, but our cars are overpriced so here is $6,000.” To me that is not selling it’s attracting scum who can’t afford luxury and refinement. SO GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR BUTT AND FIND OUT WHAT IT IS FIRST AND MAYBE YOUR ARGUEMENT WILL BE A CREDIBLE ONE!

while i have to admit i’m quite a fawning parasite and self-serving flatterer, all i said was that the rear end of this car reminds me of the civic sedan…i didn’t say whether that was good or bad, or who came first, because frankly i don’t give a ****…but look at the 2nd spy shot posted today for this volvo, and then look at this:

Just a thought to all you Civic-sycophants . . . but have you looked into the history of Volvo taillights? I suppose you think they taillights on my 850 run vertically because Volvo was inspired by the wings on a ‘57 Bel Air? I’m talking out my bum here (like all of us do on this site), but I’d imagine there’s some safety-related reason for this taillight configuration. Here’s an example . . . I can’t tell you how many Volvo owners (including my parents . . . more than once each) have been pulled over by the police when they have their fog lights on. Why? Because in Europe three red rear lights form a triangle, which is the symbol for “warning . . . danger” all over Europe. Apparently Volvo didn’t disable that feature for U.S. models . . . hence police telling 850 owners to replace their bulbs.

not sure about the styling though… what’s up with rear windows that meet the deck lip… that shatter when you get hit in the back…might as well make it a hatch.

Cool color though…. bring back the brick.

CarResearcher – I’ll show you a bunch if you want to come to the Lou, I have one less than a mile from where I sit that has “NEW ‘09 BUY NOW FOR $29,995!!!” Painted on it’s front window. I saw it five minutes ago, shall I send you a picture?

As for “scum” – you must really be full of it, since people will not purchase these cars for the money, that’s why they lower the costs. If you didn’t know, many new Volvo’s (majority of S40’s and S60’s) aren’t actually sold to indivisuals, but rental car companies. That’s a great way to be an upscale company. Without rebates, they would not sell anything, that’s why they are there. You might want to try and take a class in basic economics and you could’ve skipped sounding like an idiot on here.

I think the new S60 style is a derivative of several other current cars depending on which angle you view the car. From the fromt 3/4 view, I see a lot of the new Opel Insignia with its dropped nose and arched C pillar. From the rear, it looks like a Honda Civic. Mind you, the new Volvo styling is good but do I want my $30K+ car to be confused with a Civic?

It’s working and sales have increased, but in order for this brand to go more upscale, they need to get rid of these give away programs that attract volume brand scum that wants something for nothing.
