Volvo still a little bland? That will change, eventually…

Volvo’s future designs will become increasingly bold, according to a report by Automotive News Europe. Volvo’s new head of design Steve Mattin, spoke with the news service, and explained the current situation at Volvo. “Volvo design is still a bit restrained,â€? he said. “It still can be developed and become more expressive.â€? Mattin formerly worked at Mercedes, where he penned such cars as the SLR McLaren. Mattin said he had no hand in the design of the C30 Concept — or any other current Volvo models — other than influencing the color scheme. Mattin said Volvo has a lot of great design elements — like bold shoulders and unique taillights — but there is still lots of room for further interpretation and addition. In September, Mattin was quoted as saying Volvo needed more distinctive headlights, such as those previewed on the 3CC concept (shown right).

The S40 and the new C70 are definitely steps in the right direction. Those are the two sexiest cars in Volvos line-up. At least, I think they are.

I love Volvos current lineup. Very handsome cars. And the R is a sweet drive. They’re definately on the right track. There’s nothing like knowing you’re in one of the safest, strongest cars on the road.

I still prefer the styling of the older, RWD, boxier cars (probably because I drive one myself), but Volvo is starting to produce once again unique and well-styled cars. I agree; the second-generation S40s and C70s are very nice looking, and the C30 concept car is an excellent step in the right direction for Volvo. If they can actually make headlights in that shape work, then I think you’ll see lots more people considering a Volvo right alongside Audi or BMW styling, if they don’t already.

I wonder how designers managed to live with themselves when all cars had identical sealed-beam headlamps.

i really dont think volvo is all that great, but if they start looking like that car pictured above, then they will go up in my book.
